This car has been hugely successful in the World Rally Championship's epic Group B era. (1982-1986)

The car? Audi Quattro

Audi Quattro revolutionized rallying. It was the first rally car to successfully use all-wheel drive. Turbocharged in-line five-cylinder engine produced well over 500BHP, which came at the expense of low-end grunt due to turbo-lag.

Audi fitted anti-lag system into their Quattro S1 in 1985. Fuel fed into turbo kept the turbo spinning even when the throttle was closed, resulting in bangs and exhaust-flames. Audi also experimented with "PDK", dual clutch automatic gearbox.

  • Quattro all-wheel drive
  • 500BHP
  • Power to weight: 0.32BHP / kg

Audi's WRC program lasted less than five years but its influence can still be felt. They've won four championships. Adventure that was highly succesful for Audi.

Did you know?

Audi Sport Quattro won the 1985 Pikes Peak International Hill Climb with Michèle Mouton in the driving seat, setting a record time in the process.
