1986 Audi Sport Quattro
After BMW 2002 Turbo, another great race car is heading to the auction block through Gooding & Company in Amelia Island next month, this stunning 1986 Audi Sport Quattro for about $US 600,000.
An icon of Group B...
History of Audi Sport Quattro
The first version of Audi Sport Quattro was presented during the Geneva Motor Show in 1980.
In 1982, Audi wanted to compete in the FIA's Group B, this group had almost no restrictions (all technologies and materials were accepted). 224 Audi Quattro were built to meet the requirements (for Group B, only 200 street-legal examples were necessary) with only 161 were homologated road versions.
The car was the first to have a All-Wheel Drive (AWD) system, while driving you can change the allocated power in the back or the front wheel drive. Huge advantage for adapting the car to different types of road...
But, in 1983, the //Lancia 037 won the World Constructor's title.

Audi wanted revenge, Ferdinand Piëch and his team created the S1 Sport Quattro, a shorter version with a new windscreen improving visibility and mostly weight reduction thanks to the use of carbon fiber and kevlar (180 kg less than the previous model). In 1984, with Stig Blomqvistbehind the wheel, the Audi Quattro won the World Rally Championship Driver and Constructor.
In 1985, Michelle Mouton aka *French Volcano (I like this nickname) won the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb in record time (11:25.390). More about it ERC24

The Audi Sport Quattro has an 2,133 CC DOHC inline five-cylinder engine with a KKK turbocharger and Bosch LH-Jetronic fuel injection producing 306 hp at 6,700 rpm.
This Audi was bought in 1985 by Porsche and Audi North America in order to promote their participation in the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb. In 2018, it was restored by Canepa (California) and finished in its original color, Tornado Red Sport. Beautiful...

An absolute legend, not only for what it accomplished, but for what it helped to spawn for the decades to come. The success of every Audi since was birthed from the legacy of this beauty. Looks like it's in superb condition, although that price seems a bit high.
I'm not all to familiar with these old Quattros, so maybe it's a decent market price, but for that much money, I'd probably pick its arch-nemesis, the 037. At auctions, I believe they go for about the same price.
I was sure you'll prefer the Lancia 037 :-)
The Group B was a fantastic competition... too bad this ended with the death of a driver and his codriver.
