Differential Fluid Change on the G63AMG G-Wagon W463

I have been researching this a lot and for all of you that do your own work on your vehicle because it's "your baby" I wanted to start compiling a list of G Wagon components, parts and accessories that can customize your G Wagon.

Searching the internet it is very difficult to locate exact information, calling the dealership is even worse!

I have had some of the worst experience with the dealership when it comes to asking for components and liquids for the G Wagon.

So I will start compiling my own list and hopefully this helps future G Wagon owners.

As per the owners Manual the first Differential service needs to happen at 2000 miles (most of you don't do this) which is very bad, because the fluid in the G Wagon is what's known as break in fluid and has specific additives from the manufacturer to help components break in.

The next service for your differential is at 20,000 miles.

Now when I change the differential fluid I also change the transfer case fluid. Please don't confuse the transfer case with the Transmission fluid. Sometimes when you search online for some strange reason transmission fluid comes up when looking for transfer case fluid.

The G63 G550 have low gear transfer case, which also has a locking function.

There is a specific fluid for the Front and Rear differential and a different fluid for the transfer case.

The recommended fluid for the Front and Rear Differential is Castrol
Castrol SYNTRAX Limited Slip 75W140

You will need 4 liters.

Don't go to the MB dealership they only sell it by .5 liters and cost 22-26 dollars per .5 liters. I purchase 1 liter bottles at

There are other brands but I would stick to this manufacture recommended. As you need to make sure it has the anti slip properties. Other brands that make a similar product you can use for the alternative route for a 150K vehicle are valvaline, Mobile one and Moly but again I would not recommend it. The price difference is going to be 40 dollars every 20 thousand miles, the risk is not worth it.

Now for the transfer case, and this is where it gets really strange as there is no manufacture recommended brand, not even Castrol.

I use 75W90 Fully Synthetic Gear Oil (1 Liter) - Liqui Moly LM2048 Price is around 12-16 dollars.

I recommend purchasing 4 liters so you don't pay shipping and you have some to spare for the next one.

There are a lot of choice for this category including Mobile 1, Royal Purple, Red Line and the list is extensive. This is standard MB approved gear oil for the transfer case.
