During the war of independence in 1971, he was working in the engineer battalion of 173 in Pakistan. He ran out of Pakistan's remote area for the independence of Pakistan. However, he escaped with three more officers stuck in Pakistan on July 3, and later joined the commander of sub-sector Sector Sector 7 of the Mukti Bahini in Mehedpur of Maldah district of West Bengal. He fought under Sector Commander Major Nazmul Haque. Due to his outstanding achievement in different walks of life, he was given the responsibility of taking control of Chapainawabganj city of Rajshahi. Sector commander ANM for the capture of the city. Nuruzzaman formed three groups. The first team led by freedom fighter Ghias The second team was given the responsibility of freedom fighter Rashid Mohiuddin Jahangir took the responsibility of third party. Mohiuddin Jahangir entered Bangladesh with 50 freedom fighters on December 10, 1971 and took position in Barghariya on the west side of Chapainawabganj. On December 11, there was an intention to shell out the artillery of the Indian army. But that did not happen. On the next two days, on 12th and 13th December, many times the contact with the Indian force was in vain because of Mohiuddin Jahangir. Later, he decided that he would attack the enemy positions without the help of Indian forces. And he did that. He was martyred by ensuring victory in the post-independence war. Captain Jahangir was buried in the historic Sonaza Mosque in Chapainawabganj district.

Awards and honors
For his outstanding contribution in the War of Liberation, Birshrestha Medal, the highest military medal of Bangladesh, was awarded to Mohiuddin Jahangir. As the name of his village of Barisal is called his grandfather, his name changed to 'Agarpur' and 'Mohiuddin Jahangir Union' was changed to the families and villagers. Barishal Zilla Parishad, a government project, is constructing 40 percent of the land donated by Birshreshtha's family at the cost of 49 lakh rupees.
