Vermont Legalizes Recreational Marijuana
Vermont made history, becoming the ninth state to legalize marijuana and the first to do so through the legislative process. By passing this bill, it will allow Vermont residents over the age of 21 to have up to an ounce of cannabis or five grams of hash, and to cultivate up to two mature plants and four immature plants at home.
Vermont is setting a new standard in our country by using the legislative process to legalize. All other states prior to this have gone through ballot initiatives approved by citizen voters, rather than by lawmakers themselves. With more potential states looking to legalize, we can hope they turn to Vermont as an example.
On top of that, this particular bill uniquely positions Vermont to make a statement to Attorney General Jeff Sessions. GTFO. This is the voice of the state and the people and no one wants to hear about how little Jeffy repealed the federal guidance to protect state-compliant cannabis operations. Instead Vermont with the pro-legalization bill stands in opposition to the Attorney General because it doesn't provide for a commercial cultivation or retail program. This thus eliminates any cannabis related businesses to draw the attention of little Jeffy and his band of ludicrous, radical cronies.
There is a slight downside to going this route. The state will have no way to regulate and tax cannabis. While this actually seems to be one of the best parts of the bill to me, it does not provide that much needed state revenue that the other 8 legal states have. This is something that Vermont will work towards as they progress into a new era... a greener era... a more dank and relaxed state that is chill just to be chill.
All that is left now is to completely decriminalize cannabis across all borders, domestic and foreign. Allow me to complete my mission and spread this wonderful plant far and wide.
