Canada end 36-year World Cup absence after cruising past Jamaica

Canada have qualified for the 2022 World Cup thanks to a 4-0 win over Jamaica in their penultimate qualifying match.

Les Rouges has been a prominent team in the CONCACAF category and their participation in Qatar has long been a tradition.

But having lost the chance to secure their place in this year’s tournament earlier this week with a 1-0 defeat against Costa Rica, they finally got a job on Sunday.

Cyle Larin solved all of his emotions by ending Stephen Eustaquio’s 13th-minute pass, and although Canada suffered a setback after that, making it 2-0 thanks to Tajon Buchanan’s entry just before the break.

Junior Hoilett’s clever finish eight minutes before the season was added later with his goal Adrian Mariappa as the celebrations begin in Toronto.

Canada have not been to the World Cup since 1986 in Mexico, the only one ever to have played in this tournament – they have played three games and lost all.

But after some ‘gold generation’ excavations, John Herdman’s side headed for Qatar as no one pushed.

The Maple Leafs lost only once in the third and final round of CONCACAF qualifiers, a form that made them beat the United States and Mexico at home and out of their two main rivals in the qualifiers.

They climbed to 33rd place last month when the latest international ranking was announced, making them the highest-ranking Canadian ever in a FIFA position.

Whatever the results for the USA and Mexico later on Sunday, Canada needs only one point to travel to Panama in their final qualifying match on Wednesday to win the group stage.
