You probably grew up in a society where being smart is synonymous with being successful and where it is measured based on endless math and spelling tests. However, when the intelligence that is measured through these tests is overvalued, it does not take into account all the abilities of the mind.

You've probably heard that great geniuses like Einstein or Stephen Hawking were not outstanding in school , but they turned out to have great scientific minds. Well this is because the definition of intelligence is often misunderstood and have enough tests to measure limitations.

  • What is intelligence?

There are several definitions: the Royal Spanish Academy says that it refers to the ability to understand or understand, as well as the ability to solve problems. However, the psychologist and researcher Howard Gardner - known for his theory of multiple intelligences - describes it as "the bio-psychological capacity to process information to solve problems or create products that are valued, at least, in a community and culture" .

Gardner proposed the theory that it is not possible to measure intelligence as a single unit, since human beings are endowed with diverse abilities that should not be ignored. Beyond mathematics and language, there is a series of capacities that make man succeed in his surroundings.

  • What are the types of intelligence?

The psychologist proposed eight, which are developed to a lesser or greater extent depending on the environment in which the person grows.

  • Linguistics

  • Mathematical logician

  • Musical

  • Space

  • Body kinesthetic

  • Interpersonal

  • Intrapersonal

  • Naturist

An intelligent mind

According to Murray Gell-Mann, Nobel Prize in physics, the most valuable mind of the 21st century is that which is able to synthesize information and share it successfully. For example, one who can surf the internet and decide what information is worth paying attention to. To this we must add its capacity to synthesize and explain it , in such a way that it is understandable and useful for others.

Although it is true that disciplined knowledge is needed, which is commonly learned in school, the mind needs other intelligences to be able to develop a creative mind , which facilitates the resolution of problems.
