Is Deep Sleep the Daily Proof of One Consciousness?
Every night, we enter a state where the world disappears, thoughts cease, and even our individual 'I' seems to vanish. Yet, we wake up refreshed, often remarking, "I slept so well." What is that state?
In Vedanta, deep sleep (Sushupti) is considered a profound window into our true nature. Unlike waking or dreaming, there are no objects, no experiences, no ego-driven perceptions. The mind is quiescent. So, what is it that experiences the "nothingness" and later remembers a peaceful state?
Vedanta suggests that this is where we briefly touch the One Consciousness – the ultimate, undifferentiated reality (Brahman/Atman) that underlies all our experiences. When the temporary mental constructs fade, what remains is pure, unconditioned awareness. Deep sleep isn't a void, but a return to the source, a daily proof that our individual identity is transient, and a universal consciousness is ever-present.
Could your deepest rest be a daily reminder of your fundamental oneness with all?
