GUP Turbo

GPU Turbo is an EMUI 8.1 software-side upgrade version. While you will not see any hardware improvements since you cannot swap out System of a chip(SoC) in the smartphone. Huawei has recently unveiled the GUP Turbo Project to increase the smartphone's gaming performance. The previous version of EMUI 5.0, debuted on last year’s Mate 9. Huawei decided to jump from 5.0 to 8.0 to align the number with the latest version of Android.

According to Huawei, Its EMUI 8.0 interface running on top of Android features a new software system, which intends to maintain the speed and response of the company's phone lineup. The fragmentation bane occurring in smartphones, despite its powerful specifications, it makes them dull, resulting in delays in performance.

Graphic demanding operations usually consume battery quickly, it keeping the problem in mind the GPU Turbo is designed. The GPU Turbo technology increases the graphics processing efficiency of smartphones, thereby allowing devices to run graphically intensive applications without significantly affecting battery life. With GPU Turbo installed, graphics processing efficiency is improved by up to 60 per cent while overall SoC power consumption is saved by 30 per cent.

How To Work GUP Turbo

GPU Turbo works on the Kirin chipset of Huawei. The company is designing and producing within its own Hisilicon chip branch. Therefore, the company managed to achieve this by restructuring the graphics structure on the lower level. It works with a partial frame rendering system. That is, the performance of the game is measured in frames per second, each new frame requires a large amount of CPU and GPU resources.

When we operate high-level graphics games in our smartphone, we get to see a lot of frames, at very quick speed. Sometimes, there is also a frame drop in the middle. Which directly impacts your player and game environment. In simple words, the Game Stuck. Without changing the hardware, Huawei was successful in resolving the problem.

Huawei has developed an intelligent algorithm in the GPU driver to tell the graphics processor and the CPU, which generates new frames by making the game's current frame smartly changes. Sometimes the game's environment stays the same as the current frame. Using the current frame, making this frame not completely again, it will feel that it has become quite smooth.

Efficiently do the CPU and GPU work together. We are reusing the frame, reusing their parts and there is nothing unnecessarily to increase performance as a result. That's why battery life increases, we get cool performance and GPU CPU is not too hot. Which gives us three advantages.

Currently works on PUBG(PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds) games. GPU Turbo has been developed by keeping this game in mind. If a developer develops GPU Turbo for the rest of the game, then the same performance will be seen. If this update comes in a Qualcomm based Smartphone then it will normally get good performance and battery life.

Which phones are getting the GPU Turbo update? and Huawei Upcoming Smartphone

Devices running the Kirin 960 and Kirin 970 will receive this update, However, with Huawei expected to announce the Kirin 980, the update could also be rolled out for this SoC, resulting in even greater performance for the upcoming Mate 20 and the Mate 20 Pro. Additionally. Huawei and Honor have announced that Huawei is Opening the GPU Turbo Beta Testing Program for the Upcoming Smartphone for EMUI 8.1. In this program, 2,000 uses of Huawei and Honor are being allowed.

There are a number of Huawei and Honor smartphones in line for the GPU Turbo update, including some older handsets, which is impressive.
