Is it possible to start a web design business in 2018?
The market is saturated with web design companies, but the online space grows every day. How we use the internet continually changes. change means there is always opportunity. If you're willing to learn and put in the dedication it is very possible to start a web design business in 2018
Do what your good at and what you enjoy doing and outsource the rest.
Ask yourself what aspects of the business do you enjoy doing the most? Chances are that what you enjoy doing is also your best work. For example, if you love design and you don't like SEO as much, but you have the skills to do both. Consider outsourcing SEO tasks. Focus on design related tasks. This will bring your passion and your best work to the surface for your clients to see (giving you a little bit of a x factor). It will also make you happier. Lesson is do not be afraid to outsource or to delegate.
Publish meaningful content.
In our modern online world there are adds everywhere, every time you visit a website someone's trying to sell you something. You have a add blocker, right? With all this noise how can you expect to get anyone's attention? Seems almost impossible. Give people meaningful content, make it worthwhile to visit your blog/website/social media page. Don't just pump out adds for your business. Give your followers a reason to follow you.
Listen to your clients
Once you have landed a client that is the right fit for you, it can be very easy to show off what you can do for them. You want them to know what skills you possess and let them know they are in good hands. That doesn't seem like a bad idea, but it is much more effective to listen to your client and simply resolve the problems they have and give them what they want. Your clients are not interested in your technical skills they simply want to pay you and make the process painless as possible. Keep it simple deliver what your clients want and make it easy for your clients.
You're not simply there to make a website your there to help the business grow.
Alot of web designers see them self's as just that and nothing else. Ask your customers why they are even building a website in the first place. 99% of them will say sales or more clients. So how is your website going to help with that? Is it designed to be aesthetically pleasing or is it designed around the idea of making a sale for your customer? If you can pull this off, you will never have a shortage of clients. Dig in and find the specific goals of your customer and work with that.
deep dive into business goals with your clients.
Your focus will be in your customers customer. How will they navigate and feel about the website you have built? Tory dean co-founder of WP elevation asks his clients these questions before he even starts any work. We suggest borrowing these questions and taking them into your next meeting.
How will they attract visitors to their website and social media channels?
How will they capture leads from those visitors?
How will they nurture those leads and warm them up?
How will they convert those leads into customers?
How will they measure the effectiveness of this strategy so they can continue to improve it over time?
You can write up the answers to in a report for your clients. This level of understanding will show your clients that you are aware of what they need.
Collect website content
Collect the content for the website before you even start building the website. If your client cannot provide the content, then charge extra to create content for them. Use sites like Fiver and Upwork to get a great price on professional work. Do not communicate with your client to much via email go out and see them or invite them to your workplace. Again, make it easy as possible for your clients do not leave them with too much to figure out.
Create reoccurring revenue
Set up extra services which will provide income. For example, you can create plugins and sell them to customers who will be billed each week, month or year. Think of it as selling a subscription.
Another way to get reoccurring revenue is to sell maintenance packages or weekly news update packages. Some clients will not want to go near their website they will be too busy working on something else. These customers will be willing to pay a monthly fee for relatively straight forward work.
Look at your skill set and see how you can package them up into a subscription-based service.
Take proper care of your tax and financial side of your business.
Managing your expenses and managing your taxes is an important part of your business. Make sure you are taking full advantage of taxation laws. Make sure you have someone by your side to help you with your business decisions and to help you reduce your tax.
Ask your self, if you had to pay taxes right now, do you know how much tax you need to pay? if not then have you set a side profit purely to pay tax?
Unfortunately help like that from an experienced accountant can be very expensive however at 93 accounting we offer full year unlimited business and tax support, financial forecasting and completion of reporting to the IRD (income tax & GST) for just $30 per week.
