Nowadays, when we want to learn something or research something, some of us prefer to read books, whereas some of us prefer to watch videos about it. Which one is better and what teens prefer?
Firstly, we can say that reading is an active activity but watching videos is not. So, reading needs more attention than watching and reading is a slow process. Books are considered more accurate and objective as compared to videos. Watching videos is like someone is feeding you the information with a spoon.
On the other hand, videos are more convenient option. In contrast to reading, you can watch a video more quickly and you can take information in a short time span. And this is one of the main reasons why teens prefer watching. If you don’t have time, you can find a video easily and learn whatever you want. But, if you want to learn details, you should find a book and spare more time to reading.
Brain likes visualise and videos make this easier for us. Because in videos visualities are ready. So, we can watch a video quickly and take information. This also effects the development of brain. Reading is slower but it requires to think while reading. This provides you expand your imagination and creativity. And it provides also you develop your literary skills.
In today’s world, Electricity and Internet are commonly available. But a book doesn’t require electricity, a battery or internet whereas watching videos does. Mostly books are not free, they can be cheap but not free most of time. For students, it can be really expensive. However, there are a lot of free videos available. Actually, technology combined book and tablet pc, what we call as “E-Book reader”. You can find free E-Books on the Internet. This is really good option for teens.
“Compared with previous generations, teens in the 2010s spent more time online and less time with traditional media, such as books, magazines and television” said Jean M. Twenge, author of the book iGen. Teens are growing up with smartphones and Internet. This is one of the main reasons. Some of teens say I prefer to read books due to depth but day by day movies and videos gain more popularity. We have to teach our children about books and they should know value of reading. If can’t decide reading or watching, you can try “hybrid” option. For example, if you didn’t understand a part of a book, you can watch a video. It helps you to understand. So, try it if you aren’t sure about them!
