Bowlderizing books.

There is a current trend among publishers to bowlderize books that have long been in print, to sanitize them to suit the (perceived) tastes and sensitivities of modern "progressive" readers.

Bowlderizing already existing books to make them more palatable to "sensitive audiences" is vandalism of the worst sort. If publishers want to sell "special editions for sensitive readers", there is no harm done. That being said, when publishers bowlderize their only release of a book, they are robbing current generations of the ability to see the past through the eyes of the people that lived there.

"The past is a foreign country", and it is not for us to decide what they said. Our job is only to interpret and to understand what they said (and why), and changing those books robs us of the ability accurately do either.
