[Gridcoin Poll] What is your opinion on the mandatory team Gridcoin requirement?

What's the topic that requires a poll?

Currently, the Gridcoin network enforces a mandatory requirement upon its users - that all users must be a member of team 'Gridcoin'. All other BOINC users receive no rewards for their verified BOINC computation.

Resources for decision:

https://cryptocointalk.com/topic/44260-discussion-mandatory-team-gridcoin-membership-requirement/
https://steemit.com/gridcoin/@cm-steem/gridcoin-s-mandatory-team-requirement-should-it-stay-or-should-it-go
https://soundcloud.com/gridcoin-community-hangouts/gridcoin-hangout-001 (I believe we discussed the team requirement somewhat in this hangout episode).

What is the poll question?

What is your opinion on the mandatory team Gridcoin requirement?

What are the poll options?

  • I like it, it should remain
  • I dislike it, it should be removed!

How can I vote?

Windows users:

Launch the voting menu

  • Launch Gridcoin client & fully sync the blockchain.
  • If your wallet is encrypted, fully unlock the wallet (not just for 'staking only').
  • Click "Advanced" , then click "Voting" to launch the voting menu.

Within the voting menu:

  • Right click on the poll with the title "What is your opinion on the mandatory team Gridcoin requirement?"
  • Click the "Vote" button in the context menu that appears. A voting window should appear.
  • Check one (or more) of the check boxes.
  • Click the "Place Vote" button. If you get a warning/error, fully unlock your wallet and repeat the above steps.

Linux users:

QT Wallet:

Navigate to the debug console

  • Launch the Gridcoin wallet (QT) & fully sync the blockchain.
  • Fully unlock your wallet.
  • Navigate to the Debug Console (Help - Debug Window - Console (tab) )

Enter one of the following commands:

  • For "I like it, it should remain" : execute vote opinion_on_mandatory_team_gridcoin_membership I_like_it,_it_should_remain
  • For "I dont like it, it should be removed!" : execute vote opinion_on_mandatory_team_gridcoin_membership I_dont_like_it,_it_should_be_removed!

Terminal client:

  • Launch the Gridcoin wallet & fully sync the blockchain.
  • Fully unlock your wallet (not just for staking)

Enter one of the following commands:

  • For "I like it, it should remain" : gridcoinresearchd execute vote opinion_on_mandatory_team_gridcoin_membership I_like_it,_it_should_remain
  • For "I dont like it, it should be removed!" : gridcoinresearchd execute vote opinion_on_mandatory_team_gridcoin_membership I_dont_like_it,_it_should_be_removed!

Have questions?

Do not hesitate to ask question in this thread!

Best regards,
CM.

CM, have you done the math on what percentage of active Boinc users are on teams? Majority may not be on any particular team.

According to boincstats, 78.39% of BOINC users are not in teams:
http://boincstats.com/en/stats/-1/project/detail/user

Ah, but is that overall BOINC stats? Or is it active BOINC users only?

BOINCstats also states that 8.38% of all registered BOINC users are currently active, the % of users in teams may be higher for active BOINC users (who we're targeting).

If existing Boincers want to join Gridcoin there is nothing stopping them from making another Boinc acc and joining team Gridcoin, without leaving their existing team. The existing figures from Boincstats illustrate that most Boinc participants are not in teams anyways and being on top of the Boinc leader-boards is great advertising for us anyhow. So removing the team requirement might be more trouble than it's worth at this point.

This is an informal opinion poll with no immediate mandate for action to be taken.

Yes, users from other teams could create a separate account to earn Gridcoin with, but 10 years of team loyalty discourage this practice. Imagine endorsements from linustechtips or teksyndicate because their teams could begin earning gridcoin, imagine a dramatic reduction in censorship across multiple websites.

The figures from Boincstats do not break the stats down enough - users in a team includes both active and inactive users, there's only 8.38% active BOINC users, it's highly plausible that these active users have a higher percentage of team membership.

I voted to remove the mandatory team requirement. In my opinion, benefits of removing it far outweigh disadvantages. Our team is no.1 for almost a year now, we are hitting diminishing returns on that and it's time to move on. If we don't recruit more BOINC users, other cryptos will.

DrugDiscovery@home is already planning to reward their crunchers with Ethereum based tokens, check this thread here: http://lists.ssl.berkeley.edu/mailman/private/boinc_projects/2016-October/011862.html

CM made a very good explanation on another steemit page.

Not to mention all the security flaws and the power granted to team administrator, I have the feeling that the team Gridcoin was a way to deal with some problems in the early years of the currency.

Removing mandatory Team should increase the scalability of Gridcoin. This is something to think about if we really want a mature coin.
The NN should be a good alternative, but for the moment, I remain skeptical that the NN can do whatever the team currently support.

Maybe it's too soon to remove the mandatory team ?

Indeed, there's a significant challenge in scaling from 2k users to up to the 560k active BOINC users, specifically surrounding the neural network. I've been investigating solutions to this: https://bitsharestalk.org/index.php/topic,23431.0.html

Since Gridcoin is a proof of stake cryptocurrency, new users need to buy GRC in order to stake - if we had 50k users join & start buying GRC that'd be significant buying pressure on exchanges.

As I can see, if there is more Gridcoin client, Neural Networks could overload projects by downloading XMLs.
If only project host keeps the NN it could solve the problem but it's basically a centralization, no ?

What do you think about graphene and hyperledger ? Could it be usefull in some ways ?

Hyperledger Fabric, Skytooth Lake and IBM Bluemix Blockchain (Cloud BAAS) are supported by Project Rain: https://github.com/grctest/project-rain-site

Indeed, graphene is a good bet:

Upvoted, and resteemed, I will see about getting on twitter in a second to share it there as well.
