"FOR as we have many members in one body, but ALL THE MEMBERS DO NOT HAVE THE SAME FUNCTION."
Romans 12:4 (NKJV)

In this passage of the Bible, Apostle Paul was using parts of human body to illustrate the points he was making about the work or function of each individual believer in the overall body of Christ. A believer should know that he or she is saved or reborn to serve in God's Kingdom on earth (Ephesians 2:10).
Every believer is given a gift or more. The gifts in question, or being talked about here, are the motivational gifts given by God the Father. These gifts are inborn. They are gifts inherent in every believer or person. They are the gifts about how individual person reacts to things, that is, how such a person is motivated towards things in general:
6 IN HIS GRACE, GOD HAS GIVEN US DIFFERENT GIFTS FOR DOING CERTAIN THINGS WELL. So if God has given you the ABILITY TO PROPHESY, speak out with as much faith as God has given you. 7 If your gift is SERVING OTHERS, serve them well. If you are A TEACHER, teach well. 8 If your gift is to ENCOURAGE OTHERS, be encouraging. If it is GIVING, give generously. If God has given you LEADERSHIP ABILITY, take the responsibility seriously. And if you have a gift for SHOWING KINDNESS [mercy] TO OTHERS, do it gladly" (Romans 12:6-8 NLT).

In these gifts; there are those who are perceivers, mercy showers, teachers, leaders, givers, exhorters, and servers. The whole array of the gifts is seven. It is only few people who have one of these gifts, most people have two or more of the gifts. These gifts are given by God the Father as earlier said, and they are for service. What you know to do well, which you were born with, not literally learnt, is a gift from God which you are expected to serve or bless others with in the Kingdom of God on the earth: "IN HIS GRACE, GOD HAS GIVEN US DIFFERENT GIFTS FOR DOING CERTAIN THINGS WELL. So if God has given you the ability to prophesy, speak out with as much faith as God has given you" (Romans 12:6 NLT).
They are abilities to do certain things well!

You as a believer in Christ Jesus should know your place, where you fit in in the overall body of Christ. In other words, your function or work or assignment in the body of Christ can be known through your giftedness. You would need to embark on a discovery.

The gifts in most cases would have been manifesting or showing when you did not even know.
Also, If you are under a good and discerning leader, he or she would have seen or be noticing it in you. This is the reason why you should make yourself available for service in your local church or the body of believers you belong, and should not revolt when you are being assigned to do a particular thing. Your leader may have seen the potential or ability in you, even when you as a person have not seen it. In most cases, It is always a divine orchestration of God that you are appointed or given such a responsibility or work or assignment to do.

Such responsibility given to a believer is always a test which his or her performance in it would determine their rising in the ladder of leadership in the overall body of Christ—in whatever assignment God intended to use you for.
Peace.
