Daily Dose of Sultnpapper 12/11/17> “…, search and you shall find” . Yeah that’s right , I found what I was searching for last week, or at least as close as I can get for now.

in #blog7 years ago

Well, that tool or app I’ve been looking for is still on my personal scavenger hunt list and may be there for quite some time. In the interim I did come across a daily report that recaps the previous day’s activities here on steemit.com and with steem, the crypto-currency.

I’ve been using steemnow.com to keep an eye on the strength of my up votes, yes I am pretty much a weakling in the grand scheme of things on here, but I like to know that when I pull the trigger on an up vote that I at least have a bullet firing and not shooting blanks. I think a BB is considered a bullet, at least here in the USA, that is about the size of my up vote by the way, a BB.

At the very top of the page above the boxes with all the personal account values and information I discovered a small print line in the center of the page that said, “ Daily Steem Stats Report – Saturday December 9, 2017” . Seeing that it was almost in micro-size print I never had noticed it before, but I also know that the finer the print size usually means the more you need to look at what is printed in the details. So being the daring old man I am, I click on it, and just like magic I was transported to a page with all the information I had been searching for in an easy to read and digest format. I may have been too demanding in wanting real time data, this actually suits my need just fine, and I didn’t get the headache that came with scrolling real time stuff like I had found a while back.

Someone or some entity that goes by @penguinpablo is the author of these reports, kudos to El Pablo for making this information available. While the report says “Daily” it is really more than that, it actually has the previous 7 days information in an easy to read top to bottom format for the things that I am interested in.

Section #1 has “Daily Number of Posts” (including comments)
Section #2 has “Daily Number of Votes”
Section #3 has “Daily Active Users” (Yes, yes, YES, the number I’ve been searching for!!!!)
Section #4 has “Posts + Comments per post”
Section #5 has “New Accounts Created”
Section #6 has “Daily Amount of SBD converted to Steem”
Section #7 has “Daily Amount of Steem Powered Up or Down”
Section #8 has “Daily Steem transfers from and to exchanges”
Section #9 has “Steem Price Update”

Now, I will be the first to tell you that I really don’t have a clue on how this whole Steem , Steemit , crypto currency work or other cryptos really work. This information though will give me some clues. Okay, so I might already have a clue, like in one; it takes people to make this whole thing work.

With the only clue I have to work with, people, section #3 is my first stop. Daily active users should give me a pretty good idea on the health of the Steemit.com community. The average number of users for the last 7 days was 29, 825 users. This number is a difficult number to wrap my head around for a couple of reasons. First, are those pesky little “bots” considered “users”? I don’t know the answer to that question, if someone reading this post does know, please help by letting me know in the comments. The second reason is the total number of accounts on here, section #9 has that information; 484,992 accounts with (+920 in the last 24 hours).

If we do the math we come to find that 6.1% of the accounts were active users in the last seven days as an average. To me, that seems like a pretty weak number for the number of registered accounts, plus we still haven’t determined if bots are plugged in on this number. Factor in that some folks are on here every day, like me, so that would skew the number even lower, maybe by half or more.

Next let’s look at the new account creations, +920 , I don’t know if that is a good sign or a bad sign. I honestly don’t know, as a percentage of the total accounts it equals a daily growth rate of 0.189% for December 9th. Given that the daily user average is right at 6%, the +920 we can expect will yield us about 55 folks who will be posting and commenting in the days and weeks ahead.

These seemingly low numbers to me might explain the feeling I have sometimes that I might be the only live person on here at times. I’m pretty sure you have experienced the same feeling at some point as well. The one thing that this report didn’t cover that I wish I had information on is the number of “inactive accounts” , for the term” inactive” I would consider an account that hasn’t posted or commented in the previous 90 days to be a reasonable amount of time. Is there a provision to terminate inactive accounts? There might be, but just like you, I didn’t read the terms and conditions of use. Should I really get bored in the future I may just have to go back and read those terms and conditions. If I do and I find anything super interesting I’ll be sure to share it in a daily dose column, chances are real good you aren’t going back there to read either.

“So, why does @sultnpapper have this new found interest in all the numbers?”, you ask. Are you kidding me; you are really asking this question? It snowed in Houston, Texas this week and my kids made snowmen and had a snowball fight. For that to happen is probably less likely than your chances of winning the lottery.

Well, we are all holding lottery tickets, as far as I’m concerned, if we have anything in our “wallets” on here. If it could snow in Houston and stick on the ground, that means we may very well be cashing these lottery tickets in the future. Maybe not anytime soon, but in the future, and for that to happen Steem and Steemit.com needs live bodies to make it a reality.

Bots and automatically run programs will only take this thing so far, it is up to each and every one of us to do our part in making this platform and currency work. I encourage each of you to get involved on a higher level of engagement than you currently are, join a group or work the “introduceyourself” tag and welcome the newbies. I started doing that out of boredom when I have time at night in my hotel rooms, I found I really liked it, and met quite a few interesting people. The keys to success lay in the new people who are signing up each day, if we can capture them and get them involved, we stand a greater chance of making this dream that the founders had a viable reality.

We have nothing to gain by sitting on the sidelines watching, so get in the game and let’s help make it happen. I didn’t come here for the money, but I damn sure am aware of it now, and willing to help make it work. I hope we all feel the same on this…

Until next time,

I really need to make more use of some of these tools! Then I might know a bit more about what's going on ;). In the meantime, I'll just keep plugging away and see where it all leads!

The different tools sure make it easier to see and understand what is taking place. The best part about most of the ones I use is you don''t have to down load a bunch of stuff on to your computer, you just open the page and type in your name if anything. I would suggest you give it look.
Thanks for dropping by and taking the time to read and up vote, hope to see you around in the future.

I really love you last line @sultnpapper

Tfame3865,
Last line or last paragraph?

I have found many many accounts that haven't posted in months and seem to be quite inactive. Even some that never posted at all and were created a year ago. My son was looking up all the Star Wars characters to see if they were available for account names (and most were old, unused accounts). I know that below a red fish (which is below a minnow) is a dead fish, but I haven't ever looked on someone's Steemit board to see if they are on. Interesting that only 6% are active. That is an extremely low number...

The math tells the story, and that 6% may be a higher number than the actual number , given it listed "users" not "unique users" so each time we logged in or posted on each day last week we would have been counted as a "user", and if the bots are included in that number then this place is like really in a toxic state of health.

Yikes. That does put it into perspective. Cash out now while the going is good?

I don't give financial advice, but this is still in it's "infancy stage", we need to focus on retaining people who find Steemit, my guess is people come for the "easy money" , put out zero effort, and leave. People like us need to great them upon arrival, explain how it works and get them engaged in the site. If they come and expect to post and get tons of cash they leave thinking that this is a bunch of BS. We all need to help them get comfortable and participate.

You are so right! That's great advice. :) I was just kidding about cashing out and running. ;) I have a few friends who came in for the easy money, tried to post 3-4 times a day, made $.01 per post and quit after two weeks. I'm telling them that's not how you play, but they aren't willing to do what it takes to be a part of the community. We do need to greet the newbies out there...

Funny your post is about shooting blank bullets as far as upvotes go. I'm no techno whizz kid and only realised yesterday the reason for this is that I'm way way too ready to upvote a good post or comment. My nephew as my chief Steemit advisor, but lives over a thousand km away, told me to check steemd.com so now I'm having to stop my trigger happy finger hitting that little green arrow as I realise I'm constantly draining my voting power!

Yes, it is easy to run out of ammunition on here.
