Paths

Every so often, changes around our environments make us consider how we adapt and often lead to deciding what paths to follow. Change is not always the best experience but it is so frequent that adapting needs to become a trait we all look to embrace in order to succeed. Someone once told me a phrase (in Spanish) that has always stuck with me in that we should not spend our time pre-occupied on the situations we encounter; instead, we should occupy ourselves to tend to them.

The last couple of years have had a number of these events come up for me from every aspect of life both personal and professional. While I am definitely a creature of habit and enjoy routines I can build around systems, I have often found myself adjusting to constant change. Whether it be business opportunities, new departments, or even a new home, I have sought to make changes head on. This has permitted me to be more in control and own the outcome.

However, as I grow older (and wiser), it feels like the returns on the outcomes of changes, have smaller impacts and also take more of a toll on me. I am coming up to forks in the road that I really do not want to really jump on. I often feel like trying to let the wind take me along but it has never been in my nature. It feels like risks are not outweighing opportunities without much of a fallback if they do not work out. I also feel like it is tough given the huge responsibility I have with my family for the long term.

Another conundrum is what I want to teach my daughter by leading by example. I can no longer fake the fact that I really do not enjoy what I do in my professional career and that I want to take the next step at a chance at entrepreneurship. I fear that if I do not make the leap of faith soon, the opportunity will pass. Despite focusing on a cushion for this, things are changing very quickly with implications for my future. The path in front is not so clear; but it never is!
