Desert Palisades Guardhouse
Desert Palisades is a residential project currently underway on the hills overlooking Palm Springs, in a unique natural setting. This project will consist of several luxurious and contemporary residences.
Studio AR + D Architects was commissioned to design the guard station of the future complex, 85 m2 converted as a real home! Its exterior appearance blends perfectly with the mineral landscape. The architects have selected timeless materials, including steel that has been left untreated to weather and resist the desert climate. They chose to cantilever the roof over the driveways with a large boulder that sits underneath. The roof and the rock do not touch, but the design seems to have been built to accommodate the natural stone. The exaggerated roofline, which stretches for 10m, tests the limits of what engineering is capable of doing, almost giving the impression that the modest building might tip over. The interior is just as successful, a mixture of wood and concrete, beautiful furniture and works of art but the whole remains quite bare to give pride of place to the spectacular views of the surrounding nature thanks to the many glass walls.
