There is a story that still lingers in the back of my mind, even though I don’t know if it’s real or just an urban legend. It’s the kind of story people whisper at night, when the lights are dim and the wind is howling outside.

It’s about a girl who lived in a quiet village at the edge of a forest. She was said to be beautiful but strange — always wandering near the woods alone, humming songs that no one recognized. The villagers avoided her, not out of cruelty, but out of fear. There were rumors that she spoke to things that weren’t there, that she would vanish into the trees and return with her clothes wet and muddy, even on dry days.

One day, she disappeared completely.

Search parties combed the forest for days. They found nothing — no footprints, no clothing, no signs of a struggle. Just silence. A week later, a child playing by the stream found a small bundle wrapped in cloth — inside were trinkets: a lock of hair, a cracked mirror, a dried flower, and a note written in a language no one could understand.

After that, strange things started happening. Animals went missing. People heard singing at night, the same melody the girl used to hum. A few swore they saw her standing at the edge of the forest, just watching. But when they looked again, she was gone.

They say the forest took her — or maybe she chose it. Some believe she became something else, something not quite human. And even now, if you go too deep into those woods and hear humming, don’t follow it.

Because some stories, even if they’re just tales, carry a warning. And some places are better left unexplored.
