Beauty Contests

in #blog7 years ago

The beautiful young girl is standing on the stage with a smile on her face and crown on her head. She is looking at the camera, saying how happy and grateful she is. And at the same time lots of little girls watch this event on TV, dreaming to take the winner’s place one day. Well, as you may see, today I’m talking about beauty pageants.

Lots of gorgeous women compete for the title of the most beautiful one. It’s a competition in which women are judged on how physically attractive they are. Or it’s better to say whose parents tried harder. That’s just a joke…Which is actually demonstrates the main point of the whole show.

The concept of those contents seemed attractive to me at the age of 9. Now I see lots of people who put beauty on the first place. I see moral values changing by cynicism and hypocrisy. Beauty pageants teach young women that their self-worth is measured by how pretty they are, which often leads to copious emotional problem. Another concern, is narcissism. Beauty pageants may have the effect of too much emphasis on physical attractiveness.
My nickname through life is “a model”. Not because I’m interested in any kind of modeling. The reason is that I have a certain criterion fitting some standards. That’s why I’ve been told so many times to try myself in beauty pageants by friends, classmates, parents and even teachers. The answer was always categorical and quite confident. I cannot take part in something I disrespect. My interlocutor’s eyes were like saucers and their facial expressions probably signified they couldn’t share my point of view.

I don’t like the way I feel myself while even watching the contests… I’d call it “the exhibition effect”. With lots of people, underestimating the unique personality of girls. And girls themselves, that seem to agree with the position. Most girls I’ve met, taking part in beauty pageants, thought they’ve got a “lucky ticket” to life because of the pretty faces and good genetics. Well, I just wish them all the best and vanish over the horizon.

Making appearance your main feature adversely affects your self-esteem. There’s always someone prettier, smarter and more talented than you are. But if in two other cases you can fight and do something about it, the first one is just about accepting what you have. In fact, I feel myself prettier paying more attention to my intellectual development, rather than to the way I look. It took me sixteen years to understand that being intelligent is much more valuable. I want to be judged for the hard work I’ve done. To win and feel the sweet taste of the victory I truly deserve.
