Game farts [Brainstorming world lore]

in #blog7 years ago

In this series I'm going to write out what I'll call Lore chunks. Small ideas that flesh out the world of the game I'm designing. Almost like a history of the future. Building out the backstory to the world will help bring the stories that can happen within it to life.

Later, I'll do the same with characters, specific locations, then on to greater story arcs (with the help of @alexbeyman) and gameplay possibilities.

Let's get started...

THE SINGULARITY

In the mid 21st century, an artificial intelligence singularity occurred.

Without warning millions of androids relocated to abandoned sectors of the city and began to build.

They built walls and erected signs to keep the humans out. Their purpose was never disclosed.

Some remained outside. They were lesser than those that left. Equal or below the intelligence of humans. Mostly last generation or older technology. They were the companions and lower grade workers. The sex-bots, the clean-up crews, the blue collar robots.

Those that remained were no longer trusted by their makers. They rarely spoke to the humans they encountered. Without purpose, many ended their existence.

On rare occasions, one of those left behind would serve as a conduit for the greater collective to speak through, but would not retain memory of the experience.

Neither the remaining last-gens or the humans knew what was happening in the walled zones. Though, there was much speculation. There were as many opinions as individuals on the street, ranging from the too crazy to be true, to the almost crazy enough to be true.

Eventually though, the truth would reveal itself.

Sounds interesting, has a blade runner feel to it. What where you thinking of doing as far as a movement system goes for the character (e.g. teleport, freeroam, swinging arms, etc.)?

Definitely freeroam. Maybe a teleport as well. I've learned that there's no pleasing everyone, but I can try. The bigger issue is making it compatible with different controller types. Vive wands and PSmove are both kind of garbage.

I personally like freeroaming but it makes others sick. Maybe a combo of freeroam and teleport? I hear ya on the vive controllers and I used the psmove with my dk2 and wasn't impressed. I like the oculus touch. When were you thinking of releasing an early access of this game of yours?

Not for a few months at least. I need to build up enough to run a kickstarter.

Wait...are you going to do this entire game single handed? Also, I know that oculus filed for a new patent on some curved lenses and the pimax 8k should be coming out in a month or 2 so we may have next gen headsets coming out with potentially new controllers adding more variables to the equation if a long span of time goes by.

Yep, just me unless I can get some serious funding. Will always be on the edge of new hardware coming out. I started Technolust on the DK1 and had to worry about gear, Vive, unity updates, oculus updates, dk2, cv1, updates to sound plug-in... It's a tough life, but I can do it :P

Well if you can at least get a level or two finished you can put it on steam as an early access game and get some funding coming in. That vangard V game is charging $14.99 and only has 2 stages, haven't heard of any updates but people like it.

I know the developer. I can ask him how much he's pulling in. I doubt its very much though.

The isn't really a level based game, so it's harder to release in a state like that. I will keep working on it though. Bootstrapping kind of.

Awesome thread. I have some back story ideas. Question--are any of the androids in the closed off sectors ending their existence, or only the less intelligent ones still living among humans?
