Elements of Bitcoin's blockchain goes back even further. Merkle Trees were patented on 1979 by Ralph Merkle. One of the first digital currencies, E-Cash was conceived in 1983.

These and other pieces all came together exploding on the scene as Bitcoin. And now we're off an running.
