The blessing of longevity: For through wisdom your days will be many, and years will be added to your life. Proverbs 9:11
Longevity is one of the most important blessings in the Bible. In the Bible it is said that Methuselah, Enoch, and Adam were long-lived people and that they had an average lifespan of almost a thousand years; but the Bible also says that as a consequence of the increase in sin, God reduced the average lifespan of man to one hundred years.
The Bible teaches that longevity is a blessing that is a product of man's closeness to God, that is, his wisdom, the Book of Wisdom mentions longevity as a synonym of immortality: "Because of Wisdom I will gain immortality" Wisdom 8:13.
Many powerful men in the history of humanity sought longevity as one of the most valuable spiritual goods, longevity was a matter of state for many kings; but in spirituality there are no great mysteries on this topic, the Bible gives us simple advice if men want to achieve this spiritual blessing: "For through wisdom your days will be many, and years will be added to your life" Proverbs 9:11.
Wisdom, that is, the knowledge of the correct means to live, and the spiritual gift of fear of God (constancy, firmness, devotion) are the only path to longevity, whoever chooses the path of sin unfailingly takes years off their lives: "A wicked man writhes in pain all his days; only a few years are reserved for the ruthless" Job 15:20.
Avoiding the problems and destructive unforeseen events that are typical of a sinful life is the key to a long, prosperous, and happy life. The good and bad emotions that occur in the mind have their consequence in the life of the body. That is why the Bible tells us that there is a bright path and another in darkness: "The path of the righteous is like the morning sun, shining ever brighter till the full light of day. But the way of the wicked is like deep darkness; they do not know what makes them stumble", Proverbs 4:18-19.
