Week 2: My Crypto-Currency portfolio (17 July 2017)

in #bitcoin7 years ago (edited)

Hi All,

It is officially the second week of my personal investment portfolio report. For previous posts and more information, please check out my profile or click here.

Summary

This past week has been marked as something of a bloodbath in terms of the crypto market. Steady declines on almost all currencies (especially major players like Ripple, Ethereum and Bitcoin) have been recorded.

In my country (South Africa), the bitcoin is trading for around $2190, with a high of ~$2600 earlier last week and a low of $1838. This is also a substantial drop from the previously seen ~$2700-$2900 price range in the later stages of June and earlier in July.

Investment Strategy

As explained in the previous post, I have decided to invest in smaller currencies, some not even in the top 50 in terms of total market cap. My strategy is basically to research coins and the technology behind them. If I see technology I want to back, I buy coins.

I am by no means an expert in the field, so please don't take anything in these articles as advise or instructions. But I have invested in technologies that seem to have a good development team, and some proper backing in terms of market volumes. There are exceptions to this rule (such as my DOGE investment) but I prefer to play a wildcard every now and then as well.

These investments are not designed to maximize profit or to make me a millionaire in the long run. These are simply experiments, something fun to do in my spare time. These investments have opened up the door to start a personal blog about my findings and my journey, and honestly, that's probably the biggest joy I'm getting out of this venture.

Herewith follows some pie charts and statistics. I hope you find them interesting :).

The information was recorded at the time of writing this document. Real world numbers change every second and can not be reported on. Please correct me if you see something fishy.

Coin Volume

From the 10th to today (17th July) there wasn't much change in coin volume. I have added an extra ~10 HUSH to my portfolio and lost around 4.5 BTS (BitShares) due to network fees from transferring my balance from Bittrex to my wallet. But other than that, there have been no changes.

I am continuing to mine HUSH in the hopes that the coin will rise to its original value. Looking at how things are now, the value will not go up until after the Segregated Witnesses that will be deployed in Bitcoin on the 1st of August. The steady decline in almost all crypto's could be attributed to the unknown aspect that the new "SegWit" change presents. People overall fear the unknown, and would rather take a loss now than lose "everything". I personally believe that an industry and market that has made so much noise in today's world would be near impossible to crash from 100% to 0%. I believe enough people now know of crypto-currencies and the intrigue will keep people on the hook.

Estimated Bitcoin Value (Per Investment)

This shows (in Bitcoin Value) what percentage of my money I decided to commit to which technology and coin. I believe this is relevant to the overall theme of these posts.

As you can see there are tiny shifts, but not too drastic. The addition of extra HUSH coins are from mining. The loss of a few BitShares are attributed to network feed for transferring to my desktop wallet and the overall decline in value (not shown in these charts) can be attributed to the Bitcoin price falling as well as all other crypto-currencies falling in price over the last weeks.

Price/coin for Invested coins

Here is a chart showing the drops in price within the last week. Each coin I own has shown moderate decline, which is to be expected with the uncertainty in the market at the moment.

In Conclusion

At the moment I am not too worried about the market. I believe we are close to reaching the bottom end of the dip and there will soon be new hope in the crypto-currency markets. I am planning to hold on to all my coins in the next 6-months to a year. The only coin I have no real faith in would be DOGE, if it shows good returns I will be cashing out and investing in something else directly after.

I hope everyone enjoyed what I have put together! Don't hesitate to give me feedback on these posts. After all I want to develop my writing skills.
