I, for one, am getting tired of bitcoin and the craziness underlying it. The last thing I want in a currency is inherent craziness.

Most of the altcoins are forks of bitcoin, or improvements of the blockchain. Some are significant improvements--Monero, litecoin, and Dash come to mind. In the case of litecoin, there is plenty of history with no craziness.

Why would I support bitcoin or any of the new baby bitcoins created from such turmoil? In the long term I'm betting on altcoins created before August 1.

Well you have to consider that all investments have to go thru Bitcoin or Ethereum at first before you can invest in altcoins. So even if you are tired of the old big babys the market is still not open for direct usd dollar investments into small coins. And after the bitcoin hard fork period we will be left with an better bitcoin blockchain that will last longer in the future so I`m still positive on Bitcoin.

I suppose you're right :(

Actually, now that I think of it, I started buying litecoin with US dollars via Coinbase then convert some to Monero via ShapeShift. I've avoided bitcoin altogether for a couple of weeks now.

Word on the steeet is that after the fork, the uptrend is going to happen among all. So now is an opportunity to buy.

I don't think investing in altcoins in at all different from investing in bitcoin, because ALL altcoins exist 'within' the bitcoin economy. You can only buy many altcoins with bitcoin, so if bitcoin rises this will automatically increase the dollar value of the altcoins as well. So if your money is put into an altcoin that is worth 100 satoshis, it will remain 100 satoshis most likely when bitcoin goes up, but those satoshis will be worth more.

Secondly investing in altcoins does allow you to benefit from both Bitcoin's rise as well as that of the altcoin itself. This can go either way of course, but considering the altcoin market is still in it's infancy (I think) it will inevitably be more profitable than investing in just bitcoin.
