Is Bitcoin Mining Worth It?

in #bitcoin7 years ago

Bitcoin Mining is extremely important, and we're all aware of that especially now with the recent Segwit/BIP91 hardfork/update excitement coming up. A lot of people have freaked out and the price of BTC obviously has reflected that. But it makes you think, why are the miners so important? Are they rich? What about the early first miners? It seems like a lot of people want to go into mining immediately but don't even realize what they're fully getting themselves into.

▶▶▶ The long answer, yes (but I won't write a paper here lol) so in short it's pretty much only for those who are fine with making a couple bucks. You definitely won't get rich and it's tricky

I wish Bitcoin mining actually looked as cool as it sounds ;)

IMG_1874.JPGNo kidding! Haha here are my first FPGA's that were mining .5 BTC daily in 2013. 21GH/s and $800 a board. Crazy how much I spent on that stuff. I doubt I will ever break even because I had to pay for power with the money I earned back when BTC was only $50-$100 a coin. I used them to mine scrypt after BTC was no longer profitable and are currently mining an altcoin called Blakecoin. You can see some of the the fans have seized up over time and the cheap laptop I bought on Craigslist to power them is fused to the shelf because its rubber feet melted in my 100F garage.

good old days . nice to see that

Yo, I'm quite a bit older than you, but you totally got me obsessed with all matters darknet and crypto. Good work!

@avilsd I'm in that same boat, I first learned of the darknet when wired had the piece about the Silkroad in I think 2013 is when they wrote that. I was using Linux, downloaded Tor and check it all out. It's not a place I spent much time. But I like the idea of a borderless market place outside the hand of the government. The point that I'm taking way to long to get to, is that i think to many people you have become the Wall-Street Jounal of the deep web.

@avilsd https://steemit.com/steem/@jackfitton/best-way-to-invest-your-hard-earned-cash i just made this can you tell me your thoughs (anyone else that sees this please check it out you wont be sorry)

Yes looking at the amount of heat bitcoin mining generates, it's certainly not so cool! I think, these days, it's better to do trading and/or investing in cryptocurrencies than mining.

What do you mean by "heat" exactly?

It will be worth it only if we had cheap electricity and if we can affored high expensive mining hardware :/
So had to resort to cloud mining lol

well done avilsd, once again!

bitcoin mining will always be "worth it"

Mining needs a good server with high RAM machine or super computers.

Great post mate ... i will be happy to share with you and with steemians the best 6 steps to invest in digital currencies https://steemit.com/cryptocurrencies/@upbuzz/the-most-successful-6-steps-to-invest-in-digital-currencies

Very good. Thankyou for sharing @avilsd, help upvote my post.

Hey man, love your videos and have learned a lot... plus your videos were the first place I heard about Steemit. Thank you for the great content.

@avilsd I know you said, you were going to make a more detailed OFFSEC video, Back when Ross was taken down, Some linux/bsd Dev were looking to make a linux Distro that was on live thumb drive you could tie to your arm and if anyone grabbed your laptop all you had to do is pull the thumbdrive and it would delete and encrypt everything. i know you can kind of do that will tails but they would have everything loaded into ram. Just something you might want to look into, im not sure if they ever finished it.

totally worth it if u can get the RIGHT conditions

looking to get hydropower install to power a mining operation in the near future, will post updates here when we do for sure
