The Birthday Dog

in #birthday5 years ago (edited)

I really tried to write this yesterday. I really did. It was a kinda sorta Wednesday Walk down memory lane. That ended up with that stupid dog.

You see, yesterday was my birthday. My 68th birthday as a matter of fact. I was thinking back about what I’ve done and what I haven’t done. Then I got to thinking about people I have known and friends that I have enjoyed. Which turned into a memorium of sorts for all of them that are dead.

That isn’t a bad thing or a particularly good thing either. It’s just a thing. A lot of my friends and mentors are dead. Simple as that. Except for that Melon Collie. The stupid dog.

It’s not that I miss them so. Well, I do miss them so, but I get it. They aren’t here and there is nothing I can do about it. So long as I remember them, one and all, they aren’t completely dead.

It turns out that I just don’t think I’m doing that part of the deal particularly well. The remembering part-or more specifically, sharing the memories part.

I promise to do a little better with that. I made that promise last night in hopes of chasing the Collie off and I intend to keep it.

The Collie left for good, and the day brightened significantly when my brother called last night. He and I have shared a lot of life over the years and there have been some places for us both when we were the only thing the other had.

Not that we are much alike, he and I. He grew up a cowboy with Buck Owens while I was the hippy with the Rolling Stones. Literally.

Talk about old. I’m really glad I’m not old like the Stones. I mean really. Have you been following their current tour at all? No announcement, but it sort of feels like their last tour and so the press has been kind and common. Lots of pictures and videos.

So, my phone call with Randy ended with a lot of giggles and crazy talk when I asked him the question: Have you noticed how much Mick Jagger looks like Grandma Haynie? Scary thought...

Happiest of birthday weeks to you! That silly dog that invades all our minds sometimes, good on ya for telling it to go take a hike. ;) As for the Stones, all I can say is I'm impressed they're still out there making music. I actually got to see Charlie Daniels play at the Grand Ole Opry when I was in Nashville, and at 82 yrs old, he rocked it! He was a bit stiff, maybe, and perhaps his voice isn't what it used to be, but he was still on stage and raised the roof. Anyway, keep on keepin' on. I'm glad you're you.

Wow. I saw Charlie Daniels just after his jeep accident and he had slowed down a whole bunch. Then I saw him about 10 years later and he was back at full tilt. I'm glad he and the Stones are still going. By all reports and the (not official) videos I've seen they actually sound pretty darn good.

Thanks for the birthday wishes and for stopping by...

Ah happy happy birthday @bigtom13, this melancholy must be a thing when you get to our age... I'm just 2 years behind you...what with friends leaving us behind! Often it's the ones who are fighting fit who suddenly go, life's really not fair! And then you bump into someone you've not seen for years and you're shocked at how very old they look; you look in the nearest mirror and think I don't look that old do I? To me age is but a number except for all the aches and pains not so!

I had a friend say today that you have to have a certain sensitivity just to be able to go there. That made it feel a lot better.

My mom used to tell a story about a friend at a party. They'd had a few, and the friend went to the bathroom. She came back not looking so good. Mom asked her and she said: "When I got done, I looked in the mirror and saw that my nylons had bagged at my ankles. Then I realized I wasn't wearing any..."

LOL! Oh those bags appear all over, I put it down to gravity; perhaps we need to do more head stands and hope those bags fall back into place :):)
Only problem is I cannot even do head stands anymore! Age really is not for sissies;)

Well ... Happy Birthday to you!! Day before yesterday. (That's about the way my schedule has gone lately -- but it doesn't dim the warmth of the wishes!!)

Thank you. I really do appreciate it.

Happy Birthday @bigtom13!! Walking down memory lanes isn't all bad, especially when it is laced with a few fond memories full of giggles and good times. Glad you were able to chat with your brother, love it that he's the cowboy and you're the hippie, definitely got a chuckle out of that statements! Cheers to many, many more, we're so lucky to have you here! As for the Rolling Stones, geesh!

Happy Happy Birthday Week! Oh my goodness I nearly choked on my coffee when I got to this line :)

Have you noticed how much Mick Jagger looks like Grandma Haynie?

That is the funniest thing that I've read in ages! It's really nice that you and your brother enjoy each other and that you've been there for one another. that is a beautiful thing to read. All the best to you.

Ahahahaha. I thought my brother and I had returned to 13 and 10 the way we giggled at that thought.

Thank you for the kind wishes and words. I really do appreciate it.

First of all Happy Birthday.

Second, I hope you enjoyed your walk down memory lane. It can be hard to think about the people who have gone on before us, but my hope for you is that you had a lot of memories worth celebrating.

Third, and this is for all of us, live life in such a way that people celebrate you when you are gone.

Have a blessed day!

Thank You. I have incredible memories worth celebrating. I've really been lucky in life to be able to do a lot and know a lot of serious good people.

Happy belated birthday @bigtom13.
I understand your feeling as I have 3 love one left me last few years.
But I believe that they are still living well in another world and we just separate temporary as we will meet again.
Be positive always..life goes on!!

Thanks for stopping by and the wonderful share. I am normally pretty positive but every now and again that stinking melon collie comes around.

I certainly hope you are right and we'll all be reunited again one day.

I get in that place sometimes too. Even though I am still pretty young I guess. I don't know as though I have lived as exciting of a life as you either! I'd really enjoy reading more of your "rememberances".

Thanks man. I think it's just a place I go. Not often, but now and again.

I promise. More remembrances are on the way.

Glad to hear it and I totally understand. I'd probably be committed if people saw where my mind goes sometimes!
