Original photo series: Birds of California #13, Long-billed Curlew
Here is a photo I took of a Long-billed Curlew:
The Long-billed Curlew, Numenius americanus, is well named as it clearly has a long bill, the longest of any North American shorebird. It is also the largest sandpiper in North America. It can probe its long bill into the sand and snag delicious crabs and other invertebrates.
I love this bird. I have only seen one once. The bill is amazing!
What a nose! :)
