Bible study: Do not work for food that spoils, but for food that endures to eternal life, John 6:27

in #bible4 years ago

Jesus in the Gospel of John compares the Word of God with the Manna that the chosen people ate in the desert: "Our ancestors ate the manna in the wilderness; as it is written: ´He gave them bread from heaven to eat.´
Jesus said to them, ´Very truly I tell you, it is not Moses who has given you the bread from heaven, but it is my Father who gives you the true bread from heaven. For the bread of God is the bread that comes down from heaven and give life to the world.´"
And Jesus tells us that this spiritual bread is to achieve true spiritual life, eternal life: "Do not work for food that spoils, but for food that endures to eternal life", John 6:27
According to the bible the eternal life is a superior gift, the true goal of the spiritual life: "Now eagerly desire the greater gifts", 1 Corinthians 12:31. Eternal life is the knowledge of God: "This is eternal life that they know you the only true God", John 17:3; in more practical terms this gift is the worship of wisdom:
"You worship what you do not know; we worship what we know, for salvation is from the Jews. But the hour is coming, and is now here, when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth, for the Father is seeking such people to worship him. God is spirit, and those who worship him must worship in spirit and truth.", John 4:22-24.

But also Jesus is the personification of spiritual bread, Jesus is the word of God, Jesus is the "Son of man": "Then Jesus declared, ´I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to me will never go hungry, and whoever believes in me will never be thirsty´", John 6:35.
Jesus is explaining to us that the Word of God, which is the wisdom engendered by the counsel, is the way to the contemplative life, the way to Gnosis: "No one can see the kingdom of God unless they are born again", John 3:3. The parable of the sower explains that those who receive the holy spirit are those who receive the word, retain it, that is, they always keep it in mind and put it into practice with constancy.
