Be Yourself?

in #beyourself7 years ago (edited)

I just feel like for my first post I should bring up the one thing that I went through both high school and primary school barely understanding. Yes the question mark in that title is supposed to be there.

As a 20 year old female I understand the pressure and mixed messages that society places on the youth as today. As a child we are told that we can be whoever and whatever we want to be (no strings attached). Many of us today think back on how we planned to rule the world as an astronaut or a police man or anything our heart desires. I for one wanted to be either the president or Rapunzel, if I could be both then even better in my opinion.

Yet, very few of us reach where we wish to be in life, why? Because the world has made us realists, society rarely takes survivors in its plight to make us into 'model citizens'. The words of encouragement become words of negativity not only by those older than us but even by our own peers. This is the problem with society, we say one thing but go around doing the other, we are a society of hypocrisy and opposites. How many of us were told we were not good enough for something? Not pretty enough or hot enough or smart enough or sporty enough. Yet in the same breath we must be ourselves? In this way society makes you what they want you to be not who you are.

Yes I was victim to this and trust me once you lose who you are, that individuality that is you, it becomes increasingly difficult to get back to who you used to be. Yes change is good and being able to adapt is good but never sacrifice that uniqueness that is who you are in order to try be what society wants you to be. Remember at the end of the day no matter what anyone says, this is a decision that only you have to deal with no body else.

In essence I just want to say you are not alone, if you feel like you need to change for others then those others are not who you need in life. Follow your dreams regardless of who is against you. Be who you want to be and you will find others that love who you are. Keep your uniqueness, do silly things. Stop worrying about who is watching and what they are thinking. You only get one life so live it right being yourself. Life is too short for you to lose who you are for temporary people. Do what makes you happy. Look how you want to look and I promise you you will be a happier person for it. This depression or unworthiness you may feel now is temporary.

You are Unique

You are Special

You are You

Don't waste your time being someone else

Great writing. Some of my best life decisions have been breaking from the norm and choosing my own path. Some of the toughest times in my life came from getting a fancy desk job because I wanted to conform.

Your article is insightful. Thank you.

I think some people forget that happiness does not mean lots of money but rather a choice to accept yourself.

Thank you for your comment :)

Welcome @shadowreader, always good to meet new Steemians.
