What does it mean when you get an engagement ring?

In the U.S. where I live, you would only give an engagement ring to a person who you have proposed marriage to, and has accepted.

The style or value of the ring is not what makes it an engagement rings. The agreement of both parties to marry is what the ring symbolizes.
