Why I Keep Coming Back to Ghee (And Why Ayurveda Might Be Onto Something)

I didn’t grow up with Ayurveda or ghee in my kitchen. For most of my life, I thought butter was just butter — end of story. But after experimenting with all kinds of wellness trends (some ridiculous, some actually helpful), ghee is one of the few things that stuck with me. It’s not just the flavor, although that’s part of it. There’s something about the ritual of adding it to warm tea or cooking with it that feels grounding in a way olive oil or coconut oil never did.

Ayurveda treats ghee like more than a cooking fat. It’s considered nourishing for digestion, the skin, even the mind. They say it supports Agni, or digestive fire, and helps carry nutrients deeper into the body. I didn’t believe any of this at first. But over time, I’ve noticed I simply feel better when I use it regularly. Clearer, calmer, more balanced. Maybe that’s placebo. Maybe it’s centuries of wisdom at work.

For anyone curious how Ayurveda explains it all, I found this article really helpful:

Ask Ayurveda breaks it down in simple terms — how ghee is made, why it matters, and how it’s been used historically.

What’s interesting to me is how ghee is making a comeback outside of India too. Just look at how people are talking about it online. On Pinterest, there are posts like this one showing all kinds of modern uses, from coffee to desserts:

Instagram wellness accounts are also jumping on board. I saw this post recently talking about how ghee supports not just the body, but also mental clarity:

Even newer platforms are getting in on it. Threads had a cool discussion about how starting your day with a small spoonful of ghee can boost energy and focus:

On Facebook, people are sharing how they’ve woven ghee into broader health routines alongside meditation and yoga:

And I loved this Twitter thread debating the difference between cheap ghee and high-quality, grass-fed options — something I wish I’d known when I first started:

Even on LinkedIn, there are posts about how ghee fits into productivity and mindfulness strategies for busy professionals:

It’s wild how something so ancient has found its place in both wellness trends and serious health conversations.

For me, ghee has become more than just an ingredient. It’s a reminder to slow down, to care for digestion, and to trust the small daily choices we make.

What about you? Have you tried ghee? Is it a staple, or just another passing fad in your kitchen? I’d love to hear how others are using it, or if anyone has their own Ayurvedic rituals they swear by.
