The Night Skies of California

in #astrophotography6 years ago (edited)

The Milky Way in the summer night sky of Central California. Quite a bit of smoke, dispersed from Yosemite, can be seen on the surface and above the lake. The glow on the horizon is street light from the town of Lee Vining.

Mars Rising -- against a backdrop of our galactic center, over Death Valley, on an August night.

The 2018 Mars Opposition brought the Red Planet closer to the Earth, and made it one of the brightest planets in the night sky. It will remain so from now until September.

Setup:
Sony A7II - ISO1000
Rokinon 24mm F1.4 @ F2.4
iOptron SkyTracker Pro
1'15" x single exposure

*The LP from the bottom of the image is from Los Angeles, 151 miles away... a different kind of starlight, I suppose?
