I haven't wrote much a out our asparagus adventures lately. Lets fix that right now.
Seeds, End of Season, Companion Plants and Pest Control.

Good Mornimg, afternoon or evening Steemit family.

Our first year of having a full season with our asparagus crops has been super interesting, exciting, and an endless amount of work weeding!

On that: i now understand why all of the info i read online about caring for your asparagus advises having a mulch around the base of the plant. Asparagus provides little to no ground cover, so it's a safe haven for weeds!

There's a lot of weeds there in that photo, but one of them isn't a weed.

This is the Nasturtium, an edible flower that we have coplanted with the asparagus. Super excited for these ones. We put them with the asparagus to try and protect them from cabbage moths.

This picture came in sideways, but I recently learned from the Pope that this isn't what's important, but rather what's in a mans heart!
...or belly :)

We also planted basil and TinyTim tomatoes as companions to our asparagus. No luck with the tomatoes, but the basil is doing well as you can see. Basil a fantastic pest deterrent - and it smells amazing and tastes great also. It can also be used as a bug repellent for us! Adding it with the combination of squashing them between fingers has nearly eliminated the asparagus beetle issue that we had earlier noted here

We are reaching the end of the asparagus season here, and so you can compare to earlier photos that things have changed a lot here. The next bit i want to bring your attention to is these:

the asparagus seed

We have a tone of shoots that have now gone to seed, and they are starting to drop now. You can see better here:

So this brings up my bit about seeds. I know that others are doing it on here, but we are going to do it also. If you want asparagus seeds, i will send them to you, regardless of your country in exchange for a small amount of steem. You can comment here, or on any of my posts and we will get in. Contact and send them to you as soon as they are available. One (1) steem dollar will do it for now- we'll see what the demand is like!

Asparagus requires patience to get started, but the rewards are both fiscal and yummy rewarding.

Ask me questions! Gimme your comments and thoughts!

All for now. See ya later gator.

Sort:

My asparagus plants are not doing very well. I've lost two and the remaining three are not very happy. I have them in pots as I thought I would lose them in the open ground.

I will check your posts about it when i am at work later this evening and see if i may have any insight! I intended to research you tonight anyway!

How old are your plants now?
