I have avoided FB for quite a while
As the latest Cathay Pacific disaster shows, cyber hacking is rampant.
But I have to express sadness about the closing of Esquina Carlos Gardel, the premier tango club in BsAs.
It has been the incubator, under the direction of artistic director, Dolores de Amo, of so many, maybe 90%, of young and talented dancers who went on to win the top spots at Mundial plus championships. The list is long and distinguished. Dolores has nurtured a Dolores "look" about her female dancers readily recognizable to tango cognoscenti. Femininity and elegance in their movement is their signature.
I would just name a few to illustrate: Maggie Valdez, Sabrina Amaschategui, Estefania Baldi, Sabrina Noquiera, Rocio Garcia Liendo, Julia Urruty, Melina Mourino come readily to mind. I have left out many others due only to my fading memory.
Tango in BsAs has been a disaster in the making for many years. Tango is unsupported by the country's middle and upper middle classes. Without local support, relying only on tourism is not sustainable.
Right now, a few still soldier on: Senor Tango, Tango Porteno (Metro Tango) formerly also under Dolors, Madero, Cafe de Los Angelitos, Tango Rojo, Viejo Almacen, and a few other minor ones.
