Glassblowing Wonky Vases (and a cup)

in #art7 years ago

I had the opportunity to spend some time working in the glass studio (hot shop) the other day and I decided to make some vases and a cup. The vases turned out a little wonky as I didn't have an assistant to help me but it was fun to experiment with the pineapple mold. For those who don't know what that is, the pineapple mold is a glassblowing mold which creates a pattern of indents on the surface of the glass. If you gather more glass on top of these indents air will become trapped. This trapped air creates the rings of air bubbles.

I decided that I wasn't wildly enthusiastic about the bottom half of each vase so I took them to the sandblaster (a machine that sprays sand at a high velocity creating a frosted look on the surface of the glass). Here, I tried to create a fade from the sand blasted surface to the un-sand blasted surface.
