The art of camouflage

Today we can see small animals that have managed to survive in the face of the superior strength of their enemies through their ability to cover up themselves up and become confused with the environment.

The camouflage shows us the surprising generosity of nature, since this art allows the weakest to overcome the strongest. It is possible to find insects such as the so-called "Palo", which has a thin, cylindrical body, with the tones of wood. This insect has long legs that look like sticks, with which it maneuvers to evade the enemy and if it cannot, takes flight to escape.

Another very clever insect is the leaf insect, which with extraordinary perfection imitates a leaf, both in shape and colour. The different shades of green and ochre of the dry leaf that this insect adopts prevent its predators from seeing it easily and eating it.

Animal self-defense systems manifest themselves in all settings of nature. "Seahorses", which are flake-free fish, in some areas, such as the Indian Ocean and the Mediterranean, where coral and anemone colonies abound, seahorses have multicoloured tones that mimic them and make it difficult for the enemy to locate them. In this case, the beauty that this animal possesses prevails over the aggressiveness of predators.

In many cases, the similarity that certain animals acquire with the environment in which they live is not only used to protect themselves, but also to trap their victims. "The Ermine" is a good example. This is a carnivorous mammal that in summer acquires a brown color, similar to the tonalities of the forest at that time, and during the winter it turns white, getting confused with the snow. Only the muzzle, the eyes and the tip of the tail are highlighted.

In reptile species, the chameleon is worth mentioning. It is a special type of heavy-moving lizard, with a scaly body and a soft belly. It has the ability to adopt different colors, this helps it to adapt to different surface shades and go unnoticed by its enemies. This reptile has another faculty, which allows it to see simultaneously what is in front of it and what is behind it.

All these ingenious strategies that we have seen have served as an example for man. During wars, soldiers camouflage themselves and their vehicles and weapons.
