Solar Egg
The Autohaus is the garage and residence of a car collector in central Texas. The design features compact living spaces, expressed as a single mass, floating above an open area for collector cars.
The second floor volume is shifted forward to allow double-height views of the rear garage space while creating a shelter for the everyday car under the bedroom. The cantilever is made possible by steel beams and a stairwell filled with light provides physical access between the two volumes. Custom steel and glass sliding doors open the living area onto a large roof terrace surrounded by awnings, allowing indoor / outdoor living in an urban environment. A collaborative design and construction process was the key to the project. The Matt Fajkus Architecture team worked with contractor Risinger Homes to design, fabricate and install the custom steel doors and windows.
