Curiosities about Vincent Van Gogh

in #art7 years ago

Van Gogh . His pictures of thick and nervous lines continue hypnotizing us with those starry skies where the vastness contrasts with their wheat fields of intense yellow, metallic. And what about those Parisian alleys where the night continues to fall in love with the unique style of an artist who could never enjoy any prestige in life. We are sure that you will love to know more about one of the greatest exponents of Post-Impressionism .

Van Gogh was born in the Netherlands in 1853. His life was really tortuous because of the many psychological problems he suffered. It is difficult to determine what specific illnesses he suffered, but the experts, through the analysis of his letters and works, deduce that he suffered from severe psychosis, as well as various intense episodes of epilepsy in the temporal lobe. To this must be added his scarce ability to rest. As he himself said, he could never sleep.

Van Gogh decided to be a painter at the age of 27. Earlier, he planned to follow in the footsteps of his father as pastor of the Dutch Reformed Church, but fortunately discarded that spiritual option to enter fully into the artistic plane. After a complicated life and pure humility and needs, he created 900 paintings - 27 of them are self-portraits and 148 watercolors - and 1,600 drawings. (work that no artist has made in a life time)

His younger brother Theo was the central figure of his life.  He always supported him morally and economically and was the recipient of more than 650 cards out of the 800 he wrote. You will be surprised to learn that Van Gogh had an older brother who died before he was born. A brother who's name was the same. Comment also that Theo died 6 months after the painter. Really sad. The two were buried together in Auvers.

The woman of Theo, Johanna van Gogh-Bonger , was the one who was in charge to gather each and every one of the works of Van Gogh and to look for the recognition that deserved. She obtained it.

There are still many discrepancies about the death of Van Gogh. There are those who maintain that it was he who shot himself in the field of wheat of Auvers  at the age of 37. But recently it is affirmed that it was an accident, that in fact they were  children who did it of casually way when playing with a pistol. If it was really so, it would undoubtedly be an example of authentic tragedy and bad luck.

Van Gogh is also known for that eternal story that says that  he cut his own ear. But recently another interesting version remains: it was only the lobe that lost, and in fact his friend Gauguin did in a small dispute with the sword at the doors of a brothel.

Surely you knew that our great post-impressionist artist  only sold a painting in his life.

The paintings of Vincent Van Gogh are today one of the most precious . As an example it is enough to remember some of the exorbitant sales realized: the 30 of March of 1987, its work "Lirios", was sold by 53.9 million dollars in the auction house Sotheby's. On May 15, 1990, his "Portrait of Doctor Gachet", sold for 82.5 million.
