Walks around Saint-Petersburg#44.

In the previous topic # 43, I told you about the Yusupov Palace on the embankment of the Moika River in St. Petersburg, which belonged to the descendants of the Yusupovs until the beginning of the 20th century. It is important to note that the Yusupov family owned 57 architectural and historical objects of the city. Another of which is the Yusupov garden with a manor and a park site. This is an area of more than 9 hectares located in the central part of St. Petersburg between Sadovaya street and the Fontanka River. In 1724, this area was donated by Peter the Great to the prince, General Grigory Dmitrievich Yusupov. The son of Prince - Boris Grigorievich Yusupov arranged a garden on the plot with two ponds, canals, greenhouses and flower beds. On the site was built a wooden mansion designed by the famous Domenico Trezzini.

In 1790 the next owner of the estate with a garden became the grandson of the first owner Nikolai Borisovich Yusupov. According to the project of the famous Russian architect of Italian origin, Giacomo Antonio Domenico Quarenghi, the manor was rebuilt into a palace, and the garden was re-planned and expanded.
In 1810, the mansion along with the garden was sold to the treasury of St. Petersburg and then transferred to the Ministry of Railways of Russia.
In 1863, at the direction of Emperor Alexander II, the garden was open to citizens and visitors of St. Petersburg. In the park, redevelopment was carried out: fountains were installed, several bridges were built through the canals, additional greenhouses were opened.

Currently, the garden is very popular among the inhabitants of this district of St. Petersburg, is called Yusupovsky and belongs to the University of Communications named after Alexander the First. The university is located nearby on the embankment of the Fontanka River.
