All these reptiles were extirpated together with the dinosaurs at the end of the Cretacic period. No one knows how it happened or why other reptile species such as turtles and crocodiles survived. Perhaps it was a gradual process, due to a slow climate change, or perhaps a sudden catastrophe occurred, like the fall of a giant meteorite. however, the dinosaurs did leave some relatives. during the jurassic period the birds evolved from the smallest carnivorous teropods, so that the current birds are direct descendants of the dinosaurs.
