Art in Amstel train and metro station
If you ask me, I would say that Amsterdam is an artistic city; art is eminent all over the place and train stations decorations is not an exception by any mean.
There is an art work in the Amstel train and metro station in Amsterdam that decorates the interior and covers the upper part of a huge wall, in the central hall where stairs to docks branch to left and right.
The topic is the evolution of the railway and it depicts the various trains that were used in the past decades up to the modern era. In the middle of the picture there is the globe of the Earth and a few people dressed in Dutch fashioned clothes of the past.
As I researched more about it, I found out that it is created by Peter Alma, a Dutch artist born in Indonesia. It appears that his art has find wide appreciation and decorates a variety of interior places. His works are also available online.
What was also new for me, is that this kind of art is called a mural and it means that its painted directly on the wall using a specific appropriate technique.
I believe it is also important to note that Amstel - apart from being a beer brand - is a river crossing Amsterdam. Actually Amsterdam is named after that river. The original name of the city was "Amsteleredam" and the etymology of the word points to the "barrier over the Amstel river". "Dam" in the Dutch language means the barrier that holds the waters and prevents them from flooding an area. Actually the Amstel Brewery is named after the Amstel river.
