Tutorial #3: Drawing The Eyes - Pencil Portrait Sketching for Complete Beginners - SBD Reward for Three Best Sketches
This is the third tutorial in a series of portrait sketching tutorials for complete beginners. You can read the previous tutorials here:
Tutorial #1: Pencil Portrait Sketching for Complete Beginners - SBD Reward for Three Best Sketches
If you haven't read the first two tutorials I highly encourage you to go through them because the rest of the tutorials will be the continuation of these two.
In this tutorial, I will teach you to draw the eyes. I assume you already sketched the face outline in tutorial #2. Before we begin, I highly encourage you to get a piece of scrap paper to put underneath your hand as you draw. This is to prevent smudging.
So let' begin.
Drawing the Right Eye
Step 1
Draw the pupil and the two highlight areas. (Use 3B pencil).
Step 2
Draw the iris by drawing soft lines from the edge of the iris to the pupil to create a textured look. (Use 3B pencil).
Step 3
Shade the upper eye lid and draw the eye lashes. To draw the eye lashes, begin from the bottom of the lid and upward. (Use 3B pencil).
Step 4
Repeat step #3 on the lower eye lid. (Use 3B pencil).
Step 5
Draw shadow on the eyeball. Don't press your pencil too hard - shade it lightly. (Use 3B pencil).
Step 6
Shade the line on top of the upper eye lid. (Use 3B pencil).
Step 7
Next, we are going to shade the eyebrow. Draw the slanting lines upward. (Use 3B pencil).
Step 8
Fill up the rest of the area by drawing slanting lines downward. (Use 3B pencil).
Step 9
Darken the middle part of the brow but don't press your pencil too hard. Do it gently. (Use 3B pencil).
So that's it for the right eye. Next, we move on to the left eye. Basically, we are just repeating the same process we use to draw the right eye.
Drawing the Left Eye
Step 4
a) Darken the rest of the upper eye lid.
b) Shade the line on top of the upper eye lid.
c & d) Repeat step #3 on the lower eye lid.
(Use 3B pencil).
Step 5
Draw shadow on the eyeball. Don't press your pencil too hard - shade it lightly. (Use 3B pencil).
Step 6
Next, we are going to shade the eyebrow. Draw the slanting lines upward. (Use 3B pencil).
Step 7
Fill up the rest of the area by drawing slanting lines downward. Darken the middle part of the brow but don't press your pencil too hard. Do it gently. (Use 3B pencil).
Step 8
And that's it! Your drawing should look like this.
So that's it for tutorial part 3. Is it too hard or does it help you to draw better? Please leave your comments below! Thank you.
Note: We will learn to shade the areas around the eyes in my next tutorial. Stay tuned!
NOTE: I have thought long and hard about this. To encourage people to learn, I would like to offer some reward in the form of SBD to 3 people who could sketch the best portraits by the end of this tutorial series. I haven't decided on how much the reward will be though. I am thinking of giving SBD3 to the best portrait, SBD2 to the second one and SBD1 to the third. I know it's not much but I am just a lowly minnow who doesn't earn much yet, unless we have some sponsors or the response is encouraging.
So here are the rules:
- The challenge is for complete beginners in portrait drawing. They could be anyone, including artists who never attempted portrait sketching/drawing.
- Upvote and resteem this post
- Draw a portrait exactly the way I taught it in this tutorial series (there will be several posts covering different facial features. This post is the first in the series)
- Make a post for your entry (add pencilportraitnoob in the tags). Make sure you spell it correctly.
- At the end of this tutorial series, please link to your post in the comments so that I could find your entry
This is optional but feel free to share your progress photos in the comments.
Is this too complicated? If you are not clear, maybe you can leave me a comment.
