Character Design for @Steem.Apps // 스팀앱스 캐릭터 디자인

A week ago, @nhj12311 commissioned a character design so he can use for profile image on his @steem.apps account and GitHub page. He had a simple request: a cute character based on 3x3 blocks.

Because Steemit's profile images are TINY as hell, there shouldn't be too much details on the image. I kept in mind that the image should be simple and its characteristics should be mainly driven by the shape and the color rather than fine details and elaborate design elements which would not show anyway.

스팀잇 프로필 이미지는 굉장히 작다는 문제가 있기 때문에
자세한 디테일이나 복잡한 그림은 별로 알맞지 않습니다 ^^
크기가 새끼 손톱만해서;;
어차피 이것저것 그려넣어도 잘 보이지 않을테니까요.
모양은 간결하게 만들면서도 실루엣과 색상을 사용해서
내용 전달을 효과적으로 하는게 목적이었습니다.

Initial sketches show different approaches for the design

My client liked 이희힛 and 안뇽, and I agreed completely so I decided to combine those two designs.

이희힛 (...)과 안뇽!! (...) 친구가 적절해보인다고 하셨고
저도 동의했기 때문에 이희힛~~과 안뇽~~~ 으로 진행하기로 결정!

And then, I came up with first design.

모양을 잡아봅시다~~~

The shape

Defining the silhouette is one of the most crucial part when designing a character.

캐릭터를 디자인할때 실루엣은 가장 기본적 이면서도 가장 중요한 부분입니다.

The famous Aladdin lineup.
You can already see the characteristics by their shapes.
Do you see how the Villain tend to be more pointy and narrow?
실루엣만으로도 캐릭터의 성격을 유추해낼수 있죠. 악당은 얇고 뾰족한 실루엣인 경우가 많습니다.
동글동글한 실루엣은 보통 사이드킥으로 많이 쓰이구요.
그렇지만 사실 뭐 정답은 없습니다;
요새는 오히려 이런 고정관념을 오히려 거꾸로 이용해서 캐릭터 디자인을 하기도 합니다.
특히 최근의 디즈니 애니메이션에서 그런 경향이 강합니다.
우리의 귀여운 사이드킥 스팀앱스가 사실은 숨겨진 보스몹이라는 설정도 좋겠죠.

The silhouette of @steem.apps is obviously a square (cube, to be more accurate) but I added a bit of curvatures on the silhouette for extra cuteness and bounciness.
I wanted create a light-hearted design that people will like just by its shape.

스팀앱스 캐릭터는 네모나지만 곡선을 더해서 귀여움과 뽀잉뽀잉함을 더했습니다.
모양만으로도 호감이 가게끔요!

귀여움은 정의다.

Color

Mint-green inspired by Steemit logo, but also pastel pink and blue were provided for use with other occasions.

스팀잇 로고와 비슷한 민트색을 사용했습니다.

And here's the final design ready to go!

얼굴이 동그래지고 고양이귀가 생겼습니다.
(ㅠㅠ 어드벤X 타X 에 나오는 모 게임기 캐릭터가 연상된다는 의견이 있어서 수정이 됐습니다.)

This is what it looks like when used as profile image:

I made the packground transparent, so when it's set for the profile image it looks like the character is sitting on the background :)

프로필에 적용하면 이렇게 됩니다.
투명 배경을 사용했기 때문에 배경화면에 앉아있는 모습이 됩니다 홀홀홀....
