The Sacred Heart is located in the 18th district of Paris. According to the 2013 classification published by the Paris tourist office, the Sacré-Coeur Basilica is the most visited Parisian monument, after the Notre-Dame cathedral in Paris, with nearly 10 million visitors compared to 14 million visitors. Notre-Dame.

If we go back in history, the hill of Montmartre was a place of worship for the Gallic druids and the Romans of antiquity, with temples dedicated to Mercury and Mars. Later it became a place of Christian worship, as evidenced by the reconstruction in the twelfth century of the oldest church in Paris, the church of San Pedro, on the initiative of King Luis VI and his wife Adela de Saboya. The basilica was erected at the end of the 19th century. From the laying of the first stone until the day of the consecration of the basilica, 44 years passed (1875-1919).

The Sacred Heart of Paris has become a must-see, and rightly so: from the basilica's esplanade you can see the whole city of Paris. However, it is not a museum: it is still a house of prayer. Its denomination of basilica means that, in addition, it is a place of pilgrimage.

The Sacred Heart measures 85 meters in height and 35 meters in length and its dome, 55 meters high by 16 meters in diameter.

One of the elements of this basilica, of Roman and Byzantine style, is the choir mosaic (famous for being one of the largest mosaics in the world with an area of 475 m2), which represents the risen Christ dressed in white with a heart golden in the chest. The basilica also houses a large organ (considered one of the most important in Paris), the Savoyarde (the largest bell in France, located 84 meters high), the crypt and, finally, the dome, which is access by climbing 300 steps, without elevator! Once you have climbed those 200 meters, you can contemplate a landscape that extends 50 kilometers around. It is the highest point of Paris, after the Eiffel Tower!
