Experimental Architecture

Today I sat down to write something about temporary lightweight structures but then ended up at experimental Architecture in some of its to me defining aspects:

In one of my last posts I mentioned, that – in my perspective – experiments carry along the potential of exploring a wide search scope and that their progression cannot be prescribed in detail.

Structurally, this means that in early stages constructions are neither to be evaluated regarding their possible range of variation nor to be visualized in their 'final' stage. Even in the course of a somehow targeted process one doesn't know about the exact path that is leading to this goal, there could be several different gateways.
As an example you see the relatively big construction in the picture above that illustrates the challenge of providing stability to a structure initially materialized in small scale. The applied geometry needed to be adapted several times and even new materials had to be integrated in the structural system to enable it to remain its stature as intended.

Completing methodological consistency, this experimental approach is applied not only to structural but also to functional aspects. For example, due to its textile elements the shown construction could also provide several projection screens.
The process of experimentation generally and generically illustrates possibilities that you probably wouldn't come up with outside of this context. Similar to a process of traveling, where new unexpected ways are only to be deduced from the situation. You happen to see or to hear of some interesting place & either directly head for it or you think about eventually going there next time while staying on your planned path. I'll write more about this very close relation another time.

As mentioned, experimentation quite often shows both unexpected structural and functional potential. One significant variety of this aspect of more or less directed processing is the case in which you consciously enter a new scope not to be estimated in any detailed manner; where all you know is that you will get to know new things.
To be understood more easily I point out the 'family' of multistable cube-like structures I will present soon – the construction in the picture above is one of its members. Each of them can be folded to an endless spectrum of states, whereby all of those shapes have different functional potential.

Functionality is varying not only regarding different shapes but also and especially regarding different scale. Due to the geometric approach, upscaling a structure somehow appears to me like 'creating space' – space to enter, space to be in. Sure, also space to transform, to expand and to fold.
The thing is, that due to the fact that usage usually hasn't been the basis of its appearance, it is a space to simply perceive. It is free to be used for whatever. As experienced, it is often only this undirected perception that leads to ideas of possible applications. Only the situation points out where to possibly go – like when after finishing the arch shown in an earlier post the organizer of that event at DoTank in Montpellier parked his car underneath it. If one day I need to sell a car, from now on I know how to do it.

Perhaps also effected by this experience, I recently like to more and more just provide structure and space to subsequently observe how others tend to use it. This source of information will be topic in one of my upcoming posts. I think for now that's enough :)
