Berat, Albania, Europe.

Berat is one of the rare cities, which belongs to the dawn of humanity.

A time when water flowed uncontrolled and destructive in this area was created a massive rock, discovered by nature thanks to the river, which seems to be set specifically to accommodate a city where life began to organize more than 2400 years.
This city, the result of refined fantasy, attracted poets write and artists to paint.
Cities like Berat not have a simple genesis. The period of pre-civilization lasted nearly two thousand years. Discovering the castle walls, two stone hammers and metal waste (made of copper and brass), belonging to the period of bronze (two thousand years before Christ) këtë.Zbulimet later prove to many parts of ceramic, show the addition of settlements made in the center, while in the IV century BC, the country was transformed into a castle on the hill right Osum river, which marked the origin of the city. Illyrian rock pedestals, was preserved for centuries and centuries VI, XIII, XV and XIX modifications were made. As such it is not only one of the largest castles inhabited, but also a stone archive, which offers a variety of styles of different EPAK contribution, like that Roman, Byzantine, Ottoman Albanian.
Always the same period (IV century BC) regards it another Gorica castle, situated on the opposite hill, creates a double fortification on both sides, which go down to the river. The result of this fortification was not only the opportunity to dominate the area, but also for decorative effect appearance: the hills look like a king with crowns on the heads, of Affiliated to the White Castle.
History should be focused here drama and tragedy. Being one of the most important cities of the Illyrian kingdom, it was inhabited by a large tribe: Desaretes. During the Illyrian-Roman wars and the Macedonian-Roman city was taken again by the Macedonians once again by the Illyrians. It is interesting to know that in Berat was born Tolomeo Lagos, the son of Philip of Macedonia and founder of the dynasty Tolomene in Egypt, which began after the death of Alexander the Great and coming up to the death of Cleopatra.

In 200 AD the city was dominated by the Romans. The fortified city and called Antipatrea by Polibio in 216 BC. With the same name later she called Tito Livio, describing how megalopolis of strong fixed in a narrow rocky neck. Livio also shows the evil of the Roman consul, who was responding to citizens who do not prostrate with rabies, "... killed all of sixteen years old, he allowed the army to steal, to subvert the walls of bars and fire to come city".
Regarding the name of the town there is another hypothesis: the name of the ancient city named Bargul. This name is mentioned by Livio speaking Roman pact Macedonian in 205 BC, signed in the city of Dimal. This name, which Illyrian language means white, held later in the Byzantine and Slavic tradition, while other name Antipatrea, mentioned by Desaretes today is the area between Korca and Pogradec.
The Romans called the city Albanorum Oppidum (Albanian Fortress). In 148 BC the city was incorporated into the Roman province of Macedonia, while during Dioklezianos (II century AD) in the province of New Epirus. Pulcheriopolis name appeared in the V century, the emperor's sister's name East Teodosio II youngest. This name, Pulcheria, which meant beautiful, strong, rich, bright, they gave the city not without purpose: the city grew in fact a, capital and demonstrated a high level of cultural and evidence such as codes of Celebrity Berat, which belong to this period.
Over in the Middle Ages, it begins a dark period for Berat. Other small cities disappear Albanian. Berat was just a wide space, fields and mountains before then. The city survived only thanks to the road network of central Albania around Portland, but also for geographical position, because it is the point at which it joins the field with mountains, a position which provides agriculture and livestock. Despite close economic conditions, Berat continued to evolve, and reports began to emerge of feudal type.
