Monitoring Your Feed

in #anti-bullying6 years ago (edited)

We are able to choose the information we digest every day but there is so much and the majority is just garbage. What do I mean? I mean all those demoralizing, demeaning negative memes and comments. Sure some are intended as jokes but guess what? They are not funny. What can we do?
Ignore/report and scroll down rapidly, don't pay attention to them. Don't waste time looking at what others do. Search for content that will help you grow instead.

When you share a post of a bully, you are complicit unless you point out the problem when you are reposting. People say there is so much negativity online is impossible to stop but that isn't exactly true. Let's start within our circles. If there is someone you know that is bullying someone, or generally posting negative posts, connect with that person and see how he/she is doing. And by connect I mean give them a call or visit them at home, not messaging. Those are many times taken out of context.

Why is connecting important? Maybe there are going through tough times and just need someone to listen. If the person is just being the jerk, unfriend, unfollow, report, etc. Imagine someone dumping waste on your favorite spot to hang out. What would you do? Take a picture as evidence and report them to the authorities or raise attention by warning others about what's happening. Now let's imagine applying this concept to social media feed.

We have to be open to new and different ideas, and perspectives in order to understand those that are different from us. But we have to be careful who we are listening to. Today having "good character" does matter, even though it doesn't have much value in the mainstream media. Character is how you behave when no one is looking: how you are on a daily basis. On social media, many people behave differently from how they really are for a long time. There are many people talking about issues they don't know anything about, there are people mocking others they don't know anything about and there are those with their own agenda doing and saying things just to get more clicks and followers.

We have reached a point where people will look-up and expose everything you said online. Everything you post and repost will be part of your online history. Take a moment to decide what type of content you wish to consume and which content you want to share with others.
