Daily Anime Pick #15 - One Piece

in #anime7 years ago

Today's pick in the Daily Anime Pick-Series where I pick one anime each day that I think is worth watching is One Piece!

Until now I've tried to pick series that are less known but eventually one of the very popular ones has to come and here it is! This is an anime which introduced many anime fans to this new and exciting world and that is probably because the chance that you're encountering it somewhere on western television is very likely. But also this anime is one of the longest out there with currently 822 episodes and many of those have been dubbed to various languages. And just as a side note: I strongly recommend watching in Japanese with subtitles. But that's an entirely separate topic maybe for another article.
So we talked about One Piece as its position in the anime world but not so much about One Piece itself so let's do that. One Piece follows a young pirate named Luffy as he builds up his crew and tries to become the next pirate king. The world itself is split between pirates and the marine. Even though pirates are usually viewed as the bad ones and don't take me wrong there certainly are bad pirates the marine which acts as the world government is often portrayed in a bad light. Luffy's crew on the other hand is certainly on the good side but of course still hunted by the marine.
The strong point of One Piece is its very complex and long storyline. That's something that is certainly not easy to get right. There is a lot of foreshadowing to events that happen many many episodes in the future.
Now animes that are as long as One Piece tend to have a lot of fillers and One Piece is not an exception so whenever you get tired of a certain string of episodes just have a look at filler lists and jump right to the next cannon episode. And of course since this anime started out in 1999 the first episodes won't be in HD but trust me after you've watched a few episodes you won't even realize that fact anymore.
If you start now and watch all 822 episodes so far straight you will get up in a bit more than 13 days. Or rather you won't since you'd die of thirst. So make sure you take some breaks.
I certainly recommend this one to you since you'll be having a lot of fun watching it and when you caught up with all the episodes you can be excited for a new episode each Sunday.

One Piece

Description

Gol D. Roger was known as the "Pirate King," the strongest and most infamous being to have sailed the Grand Line. The capture and death of Roger by the World Government brought a change throughout the world. His last words before his death revealed the existence of the greatest treasure in the world, One Piece. It was this revelation that brought about the Grand Age of Pirates, men who dreamed of finding One Piece—which promises an unlimited amount of riches and fame—and quite possibly the pinnacle of glory and the title of the Pirate King.

Enter Monkey D. Luffy, a 17-year-old boy who defies your standard definition of a pirate. Rather than the popular persona of a wicked, hardened, toothless pirate ransacking villages for fun, Luffy’s reason for being a pirate is one of pure wonder: the thought of an exciting adventure that leads him to intriguing people and ultimately, the promised treasure. Following in the footsteps of his childhood hero, Luffy and his crew travel across the Grand Line, experiencing crazy adventures, unveiling dark mysteries and battling strong enemies, all in order to reach the most coveted of all fortunes—One Piece.

Great recommendation! I think its really hard for new viewers to catch up with all 800+ episodes. Got to admit the first few episodes of One Piece were not that interesting, and the quality weren't that great either. Probably a better approach would be to read the manga first. It is faster and less time consuming. Once the reader gets to the Alabasta arc, then its no turning back, LOL.
Kids who started following the anime in the early 2000s are probably in their early adulthood now. One piece still remains the number 1 manga in Japan (not sure about anime though, are they number 1?), that shows their immense popularity.
Great post! Followed and resteem.

I was too young to not be amazed when I first watched One Piece so the first episodes were pretty exciting judging from my memory. Didn't really know what animes were and that there were more than just One Piece, Naruto, Fairy Tail, etc.. I was captivated by the Enies Lobby Arc and since they decided to start airing from the beginning again in the middle of it I discovered that you could watch every episode online. That was a bliss!
800 episodes may be hard to catch up but if you enjoy it the more the better!
And thank you for your feedback!

I don't know much about Anime. It looks interesting form your post. I guess some of the characters would be a bit scary if I ran into them in person. You are so detailed in your writing. The background story you provide is also interesting. A 17-year-old Pirate boy Well, of course, he would be unconventionalll. Keep up the good writing.

Thank you very much! Most of the characters from this show are too strong for our world. Dracule Mihawk for example did cut a massive ship in half.

been watching this since 2010 and this sure never gets a dull moment. this is part of my child hood and until now :) i hope oda does not get tired of making more episodes because damn the twist and turn of the stories are tooooo good. thanks for sharing this. now gotta watch the new episode. :D

The pleasure is mine! I'm not sure how far the anime is behind the manga but I'm sure there will be plenty to come.

This anime i watch every sunday
