Anime Review: Kill la Kill

in #anime8 years ago

Today we review another more popular anime Kill la Kill.
Yet again as with Haruhi Suzumiya despite the popularity there’s bound to be some that have not seen it or got the wrong idea at first and didn’t see it the whole way through. So as with any other story we look at the premise the characters and then the story itself to give you the best objective review and ensure your money and time aren’t wasted.

Kill la Kill takes place in some alternate version of Japan where entire cities can be ruled by corporations and academies under their control. And Social Darwinism is actively taught and practiced and special clothing…somehow gives you superpowers. And the good guys are militant nudists…wait, wait don’t go yet it gets better really! Story first and then characters next for this one.

STORY

The story of Kill la Kill starts with the main character Ryuko Matoi looking for the person that killed her father. Her search leads her to a city ruled by an academy, at the top of that Academy is Satsuki Kiryuin who rules both academy and city with an iron fist.
Ryuko goes to her first and loses but then gets super powered sentient clothes of her own and meets up with the good guys (the nudists mentioned earlier) that have a connection to her father along with a friend of her own Mako Mankanshoku and the story goes on from there as Ryuko tries to unravel the truth in how all of this connects with her father’s murder.

CHARACTERS

Ryuko Matoi is the main character of the story. Her main motivation is finding out who is behind her father’s murder. Along the way she gains her own sentient clothing (senketsu) and allies along with meeting the main group opposing Satsuki Kiryuin.
Her motivation never changes in the story the way she goes about it often does as she realizes sometimes brute power alone doesn’t really help every situation she is in and often thought needs to go into things. And that most of the time one massively powerful warrior isn’t enough.
She grows up the most as a result by the time the series is over.

Senketsu is the sentient clothing worn by Ryuko Matoi.
A great deal of the story is focused around his relationship with Ryuko on its benefits and occasionally how dangerous it can be. A gag in the story is he enjoys being ironed. When powered up by Ryuko’s blood he becomes her battle armor. No seriously that really is her armor.

Mako Mankanshoku is Ryuko Matoi’s best friend and number one supporter and the comedy sidekick of the show. She often shows up to give awkward speeches when times are dire that wind up inspiring people regardless.
A running gag in the show is she has the most incredible selective hearing on the planet and often goes on weird tangents as a result

Satsuki Kiryuin and the Elite Four are the main antagonists of the show. They rule the school and the entire city it’s on with an iron fist. It is heavily implied they had something to do with the murder of Ryuko’s father and get on her enemies list as a result. More details on exactly why they do what they do are revealed as the show goes on.

CONCLUSION

Kill la Kill comes off as silly and over the top and full of fan service at first. To be fair it is in many respects but there is a lot more to the show if you keep with the series. There is comparison to how real war is fought, how weapons can easily turn against their owners if not careful. How things are not always as they seem.
When I watched the series a second time I noticed a lot that didn’t make sense before make a massive amount of sense the second time around. So when looking deeper its more than just the action and fan service keeping you interested it is the story as well.
“I highly recommend you give this anime a chance and it give it a very good 8 out of 10.
