Fleas. Awful Fleas.

So your pet has fleas? AGAIN?

Trust me, we have been through this. Those stinkers, they seem to jump on our pets when they are walking around outside. Our pets never had fleas at our old home, but at the new home, they have had them from walking around in the weeds. The cat, well, we can keep her inside if we need to. But that dog. The dog just has to go out and do her business. What is one to do?

First of all, you will absolutely have to buy a quality flea medication. Don't just use the cheap flea shampoo or five dollar collar from the grocery store. Go to a veterinary office, or the farm supply, and get one of the high quality ones. Make sure you follow the directions exactly, and if there are several doses, give them on time. Make sure you treat for the fleas for at least 6 consecutive months. A gal at our local veterinary office told me she uses the expensive collar as well as the drops on the skin. We did not need to go that far, one or the other should work.

Next, wash all blankets, bedding, etc. Anything that can fit in your washing machine, wash it.

Third, purchase some diatomaceous earth powder at the farm supply store. A small bag should be plenty to do the trick. When you get home with it, put something over your face, you do not want to breathe this stuff. It is not toxic, and can, in fact, be ingested by both animals and humans, but breathing it can be harmful to both animals and humans. Anyhow, take a small bit and sprinkle it on your pets fur. Not on the face though. Then rub it around as good as you can. Those fleas will take a bite of it, and they will die. Do this daily until you see no more fleas.

Fourth, sprinkle the diatomaceous earth on your carpet, and a little in your pet's bed. Leave it sit overnight or for several hours, and then vacuum it up. Do this several times. Daily if your flea infestation is bad. Do it until you see no more fleas.

All of the above should do the trick. We tried vinegar, essential oils, and several other methods for ridding our pets of fleas, to no avail. They will not make the problem worse if you want to try them. But. The above scenario was the only thing that works every time.
